Tigers Shutout LIU Brooklyn on the Road For First Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Towson University field hockey freshman Beira Ho totaled three points with a goal and an assist while the Tigers posted their first shutout since 2011 with a 4-0 nonconference victory on the road at LIU Brooklyn Sunday at LIU Field.

The win also marked the first for head coach E.A. Jackson at Towson.

Towson (1-9) had four different goal scorers and scored two goals in each half as the team snapped a 20-game losing streak dating back to a 3-1 win over LIU Brooklyn at home.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers scored just 2:42 into the game when junior Katie McNeel scored for the second-straight game with what proved to be the game-winning goal.
  • McNeel's goal came on the first penalty corner and first shot of the game.
  • Under six minutes later, Towson assembled a huge offensive push, totaling six shots and three penalty corners that led to the team's second goal.
  • Initiated with a penalty corner inserted by sophomore Paige Zaleppa, McNeel took a shot that was blocked by the Blackbirds defense, Ho was able to corral the rebound and slot it home for her second goal of the season.
  • The Tigers held LIU Brooklyn (0-9) without a shot for the game's first 13 minutes before Adena Gordon's first attempt was blocked.
  • The Blackbirds best attempt to score in the opening half came with less than 15 minutes remaining on their first penalty corner that led to a shot and the first save for senior Emilee Woodall.
  • Immediately following, Towson had another penalty corner that led to two shots, but after the first by senior Morgan Lowry went wide, McNeel's follow-up was saved by Molly Jannell.
  • The Tigers continued the pressure in the second half as Lowry's shot in the first 22 seconds was saved by Jannell.
  • With under 10 minutes remaining, Towson's seventh shot of the half by Lowry hit the post before freshman Kendra Sykes found the back of the cage for the team's third goal and her team-leading third goal of the season.
  • On the Tigers' next shot, just 2:38 later, freshman Jenna Florenzo scored the first goal of her career off a penalty corner and assist from Ho to provide the final margin of victory.

Inside the Numbers
  • Towson out shot the Blackbirds, 22-9, their most shots since the team had 27 in a 1-0 overtime victory versus Appalachian State on October 14, 2011.
  • The shutout was the first of Woodall's career and the first for the Tigers since a 1-0 win over Northeastern at home on October 31, 2011.
  • Sunday marked the first road shutout for Towson since September 5, 2010 in a 2-0 victory at Appalachian State.
  • The Tigers scored their most goals since a 4-2 win over Lehigh at home on September 13, 2015.
  • With four freshmen making starts today, it was the first time this season that Towson did not have at least five freshmen in the starting lineup.
  • Three of the team's four goals came from freshmen. Seven of the Tigers' nine goals this season have come from freshmen.
  • Freshman have accounted for 16 of the team's 22 points this season.
