Make It 16 Straight Wins! Towson Sweeps William & Mary, 3-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Carola Biver had a season-high 18 kills to lead the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep at William & Mary on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Tigers (16-0, 2-0 CAA) are one of four undefeated Division I teams in the country (Miami, Florida, James Madison and Tigers).

The Tigers need three more wins to tie the 2003 team for the longest win streak in program history at 19 matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson jumped out a 4-1 lead on a kill from Biver and pushed its advantage to 8-3 on a kill from senior Julymar Otero in the first set.
  • A kill from junior Jocelyn Kuilan gave Towson a 12-9 lead in the first stanza.
  • Another kill from Otero gave the Tigers a 20-17 edge in the set.
  • The two teams traded points before a kill from sophomore Marrisa Wonders secured a 25-22 set win for the Tigers.
  • A pair of kills from sophomore Annie Ertz allowed the Tigers to open up a 7-3 lead in the second set.
  • A 5-0 run allowed the Black and Gold to extend their advantage to 14-7. Kuilan had a pair of kills before junior Olamide Sonuga and Ertz.
  • Three straight kills from Biver gave the visitors a 19-11 lead in the second set.
  • The two teams continued to battle before an attack error by the Tribe (2-14, 0-3 CAA) closed out a 25-13 set win for the Tigers and gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • A kill from Biver gave Towson a 7-3 lead in the third set.
  • Ertz had a kill and a block which gave Towson a 13-5 lead in the stanza.
  • A service ace from Kuilan allowed Towson to take a 19-9 advantage in the set.
  • The Tigers claimed a 25-14 set win behind a block from Sonuga and Kuilan and earned the 3-0 victory in the match.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson hit .380 in the match and held William & Mary to a .082 hitting percentage. The Tigers have held 15 of 16 opponents to a hitting percentage under .200 and eight of those opponents have hit under .100 for the match.
  • Biver's 18 kills were one shy of her career-high in that category.
  • Kuilan had seven kills in the match. She now has 184 for the season and 982 for her career. Kuilan needs 18 more kills to become the 14th player in program history with 1,000 career kills.
  • Wonders dished out 27 assists to go with eight digs while redshirt junior Anna Holehouse had nine digs and five assists.
  • Sydney Biniak led William & Mary with 10 kills.
 
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, Sept. 29 when they host Hofstra at 8 p.m.
