TOWSON, Md. – Junior
Carola Biver posted her fifth straight double-digit kills performance to lead the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over George Mason University on day two of the Towson Tiger Invitational Friday night.
Towson improved to 8-0 with the victory over its former Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe. It is the fifth time in school history that the Tigers have started the season with at least eight wins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers quickly jumped out to a 7-2 lead and forced the Patriots (1-8) to burn an early timeout. Five different Towson players recorded a kill during the early going. A 5-0 run by the Tigers, that saw four of those points scored on the service game of Biver, extended the Towson advantage to 15-4.
- A kill from junior Jocelyn Kuilan and a service ace from sophomore Annie Ertz pushed the Black and Gold's lead to 19-7 in the first set as the Patriots used their second timeout. The two teams battled back-and-forth before a pair of kills from Biver closed out a 25-12 set win for the Tigers.
- Towson opened up an 8-3 lead in the second set as Kuilan recorded a service ace. A kill from Ertz extended the Tiger lead to 12-9. A block and a kill from Biver gave Towson an 18-13 advantage as the Patriots called timeout. Redshirt junior Anna Holehouse recorded a service ace out of the timeout and the Tigers' lead stood at 19-13. Three straight kills from junior Peyton Moyles, Ertz and Biver closed out a 25-17 set win and gave Towson a 2-0 lead in the match.
- With the third set tied at 11-11, the Tigers used an 8-1 run to take a 19-12 lead. Biver had a pair of kills in that stretch while junior Olamide Sonuga added a kill and a block. The two teams traded points before a block from Sonuga and senior Julymar Otero put the Tigers on the verge of match point, 24-20. An attack error by the Patriots finished off a 25-20 set win for Towson and gave the home team victory in the match.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The eight straight wins to start the season is the second best start to a season under head coach Don Metil. Metil's 2014 squad started the season with nine straight victories.
- Towson hit .278 for the match while holding George Mason to an .018 percentage. It was the second straight night and fourth time this season the Tigers have held an opponent to a hitting percentage under .100.
- The Tigers have now won four straight matches against the Patriots.
- In addition to her match-high 13 kills, Biver added five digs, three assists and two service aces to lead the Tigers.
- Kuilan contributed five kills, eight digs and two blocks to the Tigers' efforts.
- Sophomore Marrisa Wonders dished out a team-high 18 assists to go with eight digs while Holehouse contributed 11 digs and six assists.
- Mikala Wells led George Mason with nine kills and seven assists.
Day three of the Towson Tiger Invitational kicks off Saturday, Sept. 9 as Cal State Fullerton takes on Eastern Michigan. The Tigers are back in action Saturday night as they host Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.
