Volleyball Rallies from 2-0 Deficit to Surge Past Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Staring down a 2-0 hole after hitting poorly in the first two sets, the Towson University women's volleyball team rallied past host Hofstra Friday night at the Pack Physical Education Center.

Towson (10-12, 5-4 CAA) hit for .259 in the match after swinging just .192 in the first and .069 in the second. The Tigers claimed the come-from-behind match 17-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-8 and avenged a 3-0 sweep against Hofstra in September.

The Pride (16-7, 6-3 CAA) hit for .400 combined in the first two sets, but .077 in the fourth and .087 helped lift Towson past Hofstra.

How it Happened
  • Down 2-0 in the match, the Tigers put together a better showing early in the third set, jumping out to a 4-2 lead. After the Pride got back within one, Towson surged again for a 7-3 advantage, including a pair of kills from Jocelyn Kuilan and Olamide Sonuga.
  • Hofstra threatened and pulled back within one point of the Tiger lead, 12-11, but Towson put on the jets and ripped off an 8-0 to grab a 20-11 lead. The Pride made it interesting late in the third, but Towson grabbed the 25-18 win after a Kuilan kill.
  • It was all Towson early in the fourth set as the Tigers still trailed 2-1 in the match. The Tigers jumped out to a 10-2 lead, bolstered by a 6-0 run to start the frame. Hofstra went on a quick run to cut the Tigers lead to 13-9 and again to make it 15-12. Both sides traded blows before Hofstra pulled within one, 18-17.
  • Towson found itself in a two-point, 22-20 hole after a 5-0 Pride run, but the Tigers closed the set on a 5-1 run to force a fifth set for the seventh time this season.
  • After both sides traded points through the early portion of the deciding set, Towson grabbed a 12-7 lead thanks to a 5-1 run. The Pride scored their final point to make it 12-8, but the Tigers reeled off three unanswered points to take the come-from-behind victory 15-8.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson had a balanced attack Friday night as three Tigers hit double digit kills. Kuilan led the way with 13 while Olivia Finckel and Emily Jarome posted 11 and 10, respectively.
  • Hofstra got a match-best 19 kills from Aisha Skinner while Michaela Rucli knocked down 10 kills.
  • The Tigers dominated at the net, posting 18 block assists, including seven from Sonuga, who also had the Tigers' lone solo stuff. It wasn't just Sonuga, however, as six different Tigers had block assists.
  • Server specialist Camryn Allen put in a pair of service aces, as did Anna Holehouse.
  • Annie Ertz led Towson with 14 digs while Holehouse kept 12 balls alive. Marrisa Wonders chipped in a double-double with 10 digs and 20 assists. Peyton Moyles led Towson's feeding game with 24 helpers.
