Towson Celebrates Opening of TU Field Hockey Complex

TOWSON, Md. – Sunday afternoon the Towson University community gathered with the field hockey team to celebrate the grand opening of the TU Field Hockey Complex in the season finale against Lehigh. The Tigers also celebrated seniors Erika McKay and Katie McNeel who played their final games in Black and Gold.

Towson fell to Lehigh 3-2, but sophomore Beira Ho marked history with the first-ever goal scored by the Tigers at the new facility. Freshman Olivia Blasone also made her mark and scored the second goal of the day by the home team, her first collegiate goal.

Towson President Kim Schatzel, joined by Athletic Director Tim Leonard, Deputy Director of Athletics Tricia Turley Brandenburg and head coach E.A. Jackson, cut the ceremonial ribbon, assisted by McKay and McNeel, to begin the day's celebration.

How it Happened
  • The opening minutes of the game were quiet with little action near either goal. The Mountain Hawks took three-straight penalty corners just 10 minutes into the game and scored off the third one to break in the new scoreboard.
  • A little over 10 minutes later and the road team was setting up again for another corner which would turn into three total again, and another Lehigh score.
  • Two minutes later, the Tigers were granted a corner and Abby Webster input the ball, McNeel ripped a shot that rebounded for Ho who was in range and sent in the score.
  • Halftime started with a Mountain Hawk lead and a 6-2 advantage in shots, 7-1 in corners.
  • The second period had almost the exact same start as the first with the road team scoring 13 minutes in. Lehigh's third goal was again from a penalty corner and extended the lead by two goals with 22 minutes to go.
  • 17 minutes would go by without even a shot from either team as possession change frequently and several substitutions occurred.
  • In the 65th minute Towson had a corner input by Blasone and she found McNeel who took a shot that was deflected by the Mountain Hawks' goalie, followed by a shot from freshman Kerri Thornton who had the same result.
  • Blasone came out from her corner position and found the deflection from Thornton's shot and took the opportunity herself to score. This was not only her first collegiate goal but also the second goal scored by Towson at the new facility.
  • In the next five minutes, Lehigh held possession tight and would not cross to the other side of the field, running down the clock to the end.

Behind the Numbers
  • McNeel finished her career as the team leader in goals for 2017 and 2018 with 13 total. She and Ho end the year tied for first on the team in assists with three each.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Ashleigh Bathras started again for the Tigers, grabbing three saves. The two rookie goalies finished their season with a combined 90 saves and .573 save percentage.
