Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Battle Royale Against Hofstra

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- It was another epic come-from-behind, down two-sets-none match for the Towson University women's volleyball team. The Tigers rallied back to force a fifth set against top-seeded Hofstra in the CAA Championship Tournament Semifinals Saturday afternoon at the F. Mitchell Johnson Center.

But the rally was not to be as Towson fell to Hofstra 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 15-10), the second-straight meeting between the teams that saw Towson eliminate a 2-0 deficit.

Towson (17-15) was led by 14 kills from rookie Emily Jarome while Annie Ertz tagged the Pride for a dozen kills. Ertz finished with a double-double as she led Towson with 16 kills.

Hofstra (24-7) was led by Rookie of the Year Aisha Skinner, who finished with 19 kills. Laura Masciullo had 16 kills. Setter of the Year Luisa Sydlik posted a match-high 57 assists.

How it Happened
  • The first set was tight early until the Pride pushed a 4-0 run to a 10-6 lead before extending the lead to 13-8 and a Towson timeout. Out of the break, Towson rallied back to cut the lead to one behind a 4-0 run.
  • After the Pride took a two-point lead, 14-12, Towson answered with a 5-0 burst to grab a 17-14 advantage. Hofstra countered with a 3-0 run to tie the set once again, this time at 17-17. The Tigers snagged a 22-19 lead after an Ertz kill but the Pride scored six of the next seven points to win the first set 25-23.
  • It was Towson early in the second set as the Tigers built a 6-3 lead before eventually going up 8-5. Towson kept the Pride at bay until a five-point surge midway in the set saw the top-seed take a 16-14 lead. Both sides traded chances, but Towson could not get past Hofstra, which won the second set 25-22.
  • As in the Oct. 19 meeting in Hempstead, Towson faced elimination against the Pride entering the third set. A motivated Towson side burst out to a 7-2 lead and redoubled the lead for a 12-5 advantage, forcing a Pride timeout. The Tigers weathered a small Hofstra run that cut the lead to six, 16-10 Towson. A quick 3-0 run for Towson made it 20-10 before the Pride knocked down four straight to make it a six-point set again.
  • The Tigers closed out set three with blocks from Silvia Grassini and Olivia Finckel on two of the final three points for a 25-15 set win.
  • Set four favored Hofstra in the early goings with a 7-5 before a mini run for the Tigers gave Towson the lead, 8-7. Hofstra scored a 6-2 run to build a 13-10 advantage. As the teams traded points, Towson eventually put together a 4-0 run to wrest control of the set with a 20-19 advantage.
  • Hofstra tied the frame at 20-20 but the Tigers got a Kuilan kill, a Jarome service ace and a Hofstra attack error to grab a 23-20 advantage. The teams split the final four serves, giving the Tigers a 25-23 win and setting up a fifth set.
  • Unfortunately for the Tigers, Hofstra took an 8-4 lead before the switch in the fifth set. A 3-1 run later in the set kept Towson's hopes alive as the Tigers made it 14-9 but the Pride got the final kill for a 3-2 win behind a 15-10 fifth set.

Behind the Numbers

  • At the net, Towson finished with 15 blocks, including six total from Olamide Sonuga. Grassini and Olivia Finckel dropped down five apiece.
  • Marrisa Wonders and Peyton Moyles handed out 28 and 19 assists, respectively. Moyles was a dig shy of double-double to cap her career.
  • Holehouse concludes her prolific career with 2,268 career digs, the most in program history. She finished her redshirt senior year with 595 digs, hitting that mark for a second-straight season.
  • Kuilan ends her Towson career having played more sets than any other player in program history, logging time in 489. She knocked down 1,504 kills, becoming the third player in program history with at least 1,500 kills as she finishes third all-time in the charts.
