NewDay USA Student-Athletes of the Week: Nov. 20

TOWSON, Md. -- When you win the same meet year after year, you turn some heads. Two members of the Towson University men's and women's swimming & diving teams did just that this weekend, earning this week's NewDay USA Student-Athlete of the Week honors!

Junior Jacki Schoening was tabbed as the NewDay USA Female Student-Athlete of the Week while classmate Matt Essing was named NewDay USA Male Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

Schoening helped the Tiger women's team win the Bucknell Invitational with a score of 1564. She was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.46. She also came in first-place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:16.37. She was also a apart of the winning 400-yard medley relay team that had a time of 3:41.26. She then helped the 200-yard medley relay team come in first with a time of 1:41.82

Essing helped the men's team win the Bucknell Invitational for a third consecutive year with a score of 1384.5. He won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.10 which is a new school record. He also came in second-place in the 100-yard freestyle (44.91). Essing was a part of three winning relay teams for the Tigers as well. In the 400-yard medley relay he teamed with Owen Robinson, Ryan O'Leary and Jack Saunderson to finish with a time of 3:16.34. In the 200-yard medley relay the same group captured first with a time of 1:29.45. Then the 400-yard freestyle with Ryan Baldino, Robinson, Saunderson and Essing came in first with a time of 3:02.15.
