TOWSON, Md. – Towson University today announced construction has begun on a new complex located on the lower fields that sits in a valley southwest of Johnny Unitas® Stadium and below SECU Arena. The project, which will include two new artificial practice fields and a new stadium field, is slated to be finished in summer 2019. The two-phase plan will be financed by a combination of state funds, private gifts and University funds.
"I believe that in order to maximize your chances of winning, you have to have great facilities," Towson Athletics Director
Tim Leonard said. "As Towson Athletics continues to grow, resources must be updated and expanded to remain competitive in recruiting. TU is home to some of the best facilities in the region and we are always looking to enhance the student-athlete experience for all 19 of our programs."
The first phase of the project will include two full-field surfaces for all of the TU field sports (football, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, women's soccer) and a lined area for short-sided drills. Phase II will include the construction of Tiger Stadium, the new home of Towson women's soccer team. Both lacrosse teams will have the opportunity to play games in that venue as well.
• Phase 1- artificial turf fields for stadium field, practice field for mixed use, 40-yard practice field turf, 30-yard practice field and grandstand expansion.
• Phase 2 – Construct new grandstand with seating for 1,000 (an increase from 600) and additional buildings for concessions, restrooms, press box and install lighting and scoreboard.
This is the latest facility enhancement project for Towson, which aims to provide championship-quality facilities for its student-athletes. Earlier this fall, the new TU Field Hockey Complex was unveiled. The Towson Center Courts and Athletic Department offices in the Towson Center were upgraded in 2016, a year after the Tiger Softball Stadium debuted.
The recent growth and commitment of TU Athletics began in 2013, when Towson opened SECU Arena, a multi-purpose state-of-the-art facility, for the men's and women's basketball, volleyball and gymnastics teams.
Towson's athletic facilities are integral to the success of its athletics' program. The 11,000 seat Johnny Unitas® Stadium is where teams practice and compete in football, lacrosse and track & field. The John B. Schuerholz Park is used for baseball and Burdick pool houses the swimming & diving programs.
TU is investing $700M over the next seven years in capital improvement projects on the campus. That figure includes a new science complex on York Road, the transformation of the University Union and upgrading the College of Health Professions building.
Towson University offers the most comprehensive sports program in the Baltimore metropolitan area, fielding 19 NCAA Division I varsity teams that compete in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), one the nation's top mid-major conference. Men's teams include baseball, basketball, golf, football, lacrosse and swimming. Women's teams include basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis and volleyball. Since joining the CAA in 2001, the Tigers have won league titles in football, men's and women's lacrosse, women's swimming & diving, men's golf and women's outdoor track & field.
