Slow Start in Season Opener for Men’s Lacrosse

BALTIMORE – A slow start in the first quarter, marred by five turnovers, put the No. 14 Towson University men's lacrosse team in a deficit it could not surmount, falling to No. 11 Johns Hopkins 14-6 Saturday night.

Towson (0-1) fell into an 11-2 halftime deficit, but gained composure at halftime, out-scoring the Blue Jays (1-0) 4-3 in the second half.

How it Happened
  • Five first quarter turnovers and three penalties set Hopkins up for a 5-0 quarter.
  • Five different players scored for the hosts as Patrick Foley, Patrick Fraser, Joel Tinney, Alex Concannon and Robert Kuhn all scored. Fraser and Tinney scored extra-man tallies.
  • Towson got its first goal of the season with 12:29 to play in the second quarter as Jon Mazza shook off his defender and scored a skipping shot on the wet turf at Homewood Field.
  • Tinney and Kyle Marr scored back-to-back goals shortly after the Mazza tally.
  • Coming down the field in transition, starting close defenseman Chad Patterson looked for options for a pass and could not find one. He charged down the middle of the Hopkins defense and scored his first career goal on his first career shot with 6:51 to play in the half.
  • Hopkins went on a four-goal run over the final six and a half minutes of the quarter to take an 11-2 lead at the break. Marr scored three straight before faceoff specialist scored after winning the draw following Marr's third.
  • The Blue Jays scored their lone goal of the third quarter 90 seconds into the fresh half on Concannon's second of the night.
  • Towson scored back-to-back goals as Brendan Sunday and Jean-Luc Chetner notched their first goals of the season. Mazza had the assist on Chetner's first goal since May 7, 2016 when he was playing for the University of Richmond.
  • The two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter. Hopkins' Cole Williams scored the first of the frame before Tiger Grant Maloof got the first goal of his career with 5:09 to play.
  • Shack Stanwick logged his first goal of the year before Towson's Johnny Giuffreda got his first as a Tiger.
  • Giuffreda got a rebound off the crosse of Hopkins' goalie Brock Turnbaugh and scored a behind-the-back goal, falling away from the crease.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson got its six goals from six different sources. Mazza led the Tigers with two points on one goal and one assist.
