No. 8 Tigers Hold Off Hofstra For 8th-Straight Win

TOWSON, Md. - Towson women's lacrosse junior Carly Tellekamp scored a career-high seven goals while the Tigers scored five of the game's final seven goals to hold off a second-half rally by Hofstra en route to a 15-11 victory in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) contest Friday night at Unitas Stadium.

No. 8 Towson (13-2, 5-0 CAA) has now won eight-straight overall, seven consecutive at home and five in-a-row in the CAA.

Tellekamp is the second Tiger to score seven goals this season after senior Emily Gillingham netted seven in a 21-13 win over Georgetown on February 18.

How It Happened
  • Tellekamp opened the scoring just 1:48 into the game when she scored off an assist from sophomore Annie Sachs.
  • Hofstra (8-7, 2-3 CAA) responded by scoring the next three goals, including two from leading scorer Alyssa Parrella to take a 3-1 lead with 20:41 remaining.
  • Tellekamp then scored back-to-back off assists from Gillingham to tie the game at 3-3 with 14:56 left.
  • The goals kick started a 7-0 for the Tigers with Tellekamp scoring two more times.
  • Towson also got goals from Gillingham, senior Kaitlyn Montalbano and freshman Kaitlin Thornton as it built a five-goal lead, 8-3, with 4:26 to play in the first half.
  • Senior Tianna Wallpher picked up her third assist of the season on Thornton's goal and now has four for her career.
  • Thornton also had an assist on Tellekamp's third goal of the game with 6:45 remaining.
  • Hofstra scored with 1:50 to play to cut the Tigers' lead in half at the break, 8-4.
  • Towson opened the second half with back-to-back strikes from Tellekamp and junior Natalie Sulmonte to take its largest lead of the game at six, 10-4.
  • Both teams would exchange goals over the next four minutes to keep the margin at six before the Pride used a 4-0 run to pull within two, 11-9, with 12:55 left in the second half.
  • Parrella had a goal and an assist during the run while Carlee Ancona scored the second of her three goals.
  • Tellekamp netted lucky number seven with 11:20 to play before Montalbano and red-shirt senior Gabby Cha scored to push the Tigers' lead back to five with 6:17 remaining, 14-9.
  • The Pride scored two goals just 26 seconds apart at 1:38 and 1:12 to cut the deficit to three before Gillingham scored on an empty net to provide the final margin.
Inside the Numbers
  • Towson totaled a season-high 37 shots, including 19 in the first half compared to just six for Hofstra.
  • The Tigers, who lead the nation in free position percentage, were just 1-of-7 tonight. It was only the second time this season they were held to one. The other time was at Stony Brook when the team was just 1-for-2.
  • The last player to score more than seven goals for Towson was back on March 19, 2005 when Becky Trumbo scored eight at Connecticut. The program record is nine set by Ruth Guthridge on March 26, 1985 at Goucher.
  • Montalbano appeared in her 72nd career game Friday, moving her into eighth place in program history with Kelly McQuilkin, Jackie LaMonica and Hillary Fratzke.
  • With two goals, Montalbano moved into seventh place on the program's career list with 124.
  • With two caused turnovers, Wallpher now has 101 for her career, becoming just the second player in program history to reach 100. Fratzke holds the school record with 144.
  • Sophomore Olivia Conti also had two caused turnovers and now has 42 this season, just seven shy of her school and CAA record from a year ago. She also has 91 for her career.
  • Sophomore Sami Chenoweth had five caused turnovers and now has 60 for her career, moving her into a tie for eighth on the program's career list with Kelly McQuilkin.
  • Head coach Sonia LaMonica, who won her 100th career game against Oregon on March 26, now has 98 wins in eight seasons at Towson.
  • Gillingham has now scored a goal in 23 consecutive games.
  • Towson is 22-6 at home since 2016 and has won 13-straight in the regular season. The team has not lost at home in the regular season since a 13-6 loss to No. 3 Florida on March 5, 2017.
  • The Tigers are off to the second-best start to a season in school history. The team started 14-2 under head coach Sonia LaMonica in 2016 en route to the program's seventh CAA title.
