PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Towson University women's lacrosse junior
Carly Tellekamp scored four goals, including the 100th of her career as the 10th-ranked Tigers opened Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play on Friday night with a convincing 20-5 victory over Drexel at Vidas Field.
With the win, Towson (9-2, 1-0 CAA) tied the second-best start to a season in school history, matching the 1980 team who also started with nine wins in its first 11 games under head coach Maggie Faulkner.
Tellekamp's 100th goal was one of many highlights from Friday's game as everyone who was dressed saw action for the Tigers.
How It Happened
- Towson scored the first goal just 16 seconds into the game when sophomore Annie Sachs scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Olivia Conti. For Conti, it was her first assist of the year as the All-American defender now has four points this season.
- Senior Kaitlyn Montalbano scored the Tigers' second goal of the game 32 seconds after that to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead just 48 seconds into the game.
- Drexel (3-8, 0-1 CAA) got on the board with 27:32 remaining before Towson scored the next four-straight to take a 6-1 advantage after senior Emily Gillingham scored for the second on what proved to be the game-winner with 19:43 left in the opening half.
- The Dragons scored back-to-back tallies to cut the Tiger lead in half, 6-3, but Towson held them scoreless for the final 13:39 while scoring six more times to take a 12-3 halftime lead.
- Junior Natalie Sulmonte scored twice in the opening half while adding one assist.
- Drexel opened the scoring just 1:12 into the second half, but Gillingham answered with her third of the game 30 seconds later to spark a 4-0 Tiger run.
- Sulmonte scored her third goal of the game with 26:25 to play before Tellekamp scored back-to-back, the first of which came with 24:59 left to mark the 100th goal of her career.
- Following a goal by Dragon leading scorer Colleen Grady with 17:00 remaining, Montalbano picked up her third goal of the game before sophomore Coeli Love scored her second to set a new career high.
- Sophomore Abbe Mona finished the game by scoring back-to-back for her first two goals of the season, the second of which was assisted by junior Jenna Kerr.
Inside the Numbers
- The goal by Sachs just 16 seconds into the game was the fastest goal to start a half this season. Montalbano scored just 17 seconds into the second half at No. 6 Florida while red-shirt senior Gabby Cha scored 35 seconds into the second against Georgetown.
- The Tigers' 12 first-half goals were the most they have scored in a half this season. They had 11 in the first half against Penn State, 11 in the second against Georgetown and 11 in the first at Loyola.
- Five different players scored for Towson to start the game.
- Tellekamp is the third different Tiger to score her 100th career goal this season. Montalbano did it against Michigan and Gillingham did it at Stony Brook.
- With three goals, Sulmonte now has 96 for her career and is closing in on becoming the fourth player to score her 100th career goal this season.
- After scoring her first career goal at Yale, Love posted her first career multi-goal and has now scored in two-straight games.
- Mona set a new career-high with two goals, scoring for the first time since netted her first career goal against Stetson on Mar. 12, 2017.
- Mona became the eighth different Tiger to score a goal tonight. Towson has now had eight different goal scorers in four games this season (Michigan, Florida, Oregon, Drexel).
- Towson had four different players score at least three goals each for the second time this season. Gillingham (7), Tellekamp (3), Cha (3) and freshman Kaitlin Thornton (3) all had at least three in the team's 21-13 win over Georgetown on February 18.
- Six different players had at least two goals for the Tigers tonight, marking the first time they have had that many players post multi-goal games since Georgetown: Gillingham (7), Tellekamp (3), Cha (3), Thornton (3), Montalbano (2) and Sachs (2).
- Red-shirt freshman Rachel Florek totaled a career-high five saves in a career-high 20:54. She entered the game having played 26:03 in three previous appearances.
- Drexel held a 15-11 edge in draw controls, marking the ninth time in 11 games this season that Towson's opponent has won more draw controls. Surprisingly, the Tigers are 7-2 in those contests.
- With their fourth road win of the season (4-2), the Tigers have matched their total from all of last season (4-3).
- Towson has led at the half in 10 out of 12 games this season and is now 9-1 when doing so.
