Women’s Lacrosse Falls Behind in Second-Half Surge

TOWSON, Md. -- After a tight, back-and-forth first half, the seventh-seeded Towson University women's lacrosse team fell behind a Northwestern surge in the second half. The Tigers dropped a 21-17 decision in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

Natalie Sulmonte led the way for the Tigers (16-5) with seven points on five goals and two assists. Emily Gillingham scored four goals and handed out one assist. Six different Tigers scored at least once Sunday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Northwestern (15-5) had all but five of its goals scored by two players. Selena Lasota and Sheila Nesselbush scored eight goals apiece. Emily Stein was the only other Wildcat with multiple goals. Shelby Fredericks finished with a game-high five assists.

How it Happened
  • The first half was a back-and-forth affair as neither team gained more than a two-goal lead.
  • The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead after Nesselbush scored back-to-back goals, with the first coming on a Fredericks assist.
  • Gillingham cut the lead in half with 24:44 to play as she sliced through the Northwestern defense.
  • Lasota put the Wildcats back up by two at 22:24 on a feed from Beardsley.
  • Sulmonte ripped off three unanswered goals to assume a 4-3 lead, striking twice on free position goals and added a third at 14:53.
  • Holly Korn tied the game at 4-4 on a dish from Beardsley with 13:31 to play in the half.
  • Gillingham and Thornton scored two of the next three goals at 13:13 and 8:33, respectively. Montalbano and Dickman assisted those goals. Beardsley scored between the Tigers, tying the game at 5-5 before Dickman gave Towson a one-goal advantage.
  • Northwestern responded quickly with a goal at 8:00 from Emily Stein, deadlocking things at 6-6.
  • Sulmonte and Carly Tellekamp scored back-to-back goals at 6:21 and 1:21 of the half, but the Wildcats struck twice in the final minute to tie the game at 8-8 through the first 30 minutes.
  • After a relatively defensive-heavy first half, the teams combined for 22 goals in the second. Northwestern out-scored the Tigers 13-9 in the final half.
  • Wasting no time in the fresh half, Gillingham took the opening draw down field and hit Montalbano inside for a goal just 15 seconds in.
  • Northwestern tied the game yet again at 9-9 on a Nesselbush tally on the 8-meter.
  • Another Gillingham strike with an Annie Sachs feed gave Towson a 10-9 lead, which proved to be the final Tiger advantage of the game.
  • The Wildcats scored five unanswered goals, including three free position markers to grab a 14-10 lead. Nesselbush scored twice while Lasota accounted for three.
  • Montalbano stopped the run with a tally at 21:37 off the free position. Northwestern's Lindsey McKone scored at 20:49 before Dickman and Gillingham scored back-to-back goals for the Tigers, pulling Towson within two, 15-13.
  • Another pair of goals from Nesselbush and Lasota put the Wildcats back up by four as they scored just nine seconds apart at 17:14 and 17:05.
  • The teams traded goals over the final 16 minutes of the game as the Tigers got two more tallies from Thornton and one each from Sulmonte and Montalbano. But it was too little, too late for Towson as its season came to a conclusion.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson out-shot Northwestern 35-29, including 10 from Sulmonte. Her seven points were the most scored in an NCAA Tournament game by a Tiger.
  • Free position shots were the tipping point in the game as Northwestern converted on nine of its 10 attempts. The Tigers scored on five of their 11 free position chances, going four of eight in the first half but scored just one in the second 30 minutes.
  • The Wildcats won 22 of the game's draws while Towson snagged 18. Rachel Mills accounted for eight of those draws while Sulmonte collected five.
  • Kiley Keating played in 51 minutes, making three saves. Rachel Florek subbed in for nine minutes but did not make a stop.
