AMHERST, MASS. -- Late heroics by redshirt sophomore midfielder Matt Sovero sent the Towson University men's lacrosse team to its fourth-straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men's Lacrosse Championship game.
Sovero bulleted home the game-winning goal in overtime as the Tigers out-lasted the University of Delaware for a 9-8 overtime win. The Tigers (7-7) got the chance for the overtime winner thanks to a perfectly timed over-the-head check from Second-Team All-CAA selection Koby Smith.
The Tigers will take on the 2018 regular season champion, University of Massachusetts, Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Garber Field. It is a rematch of last season's title game and the third time in the last four years the Tigers will meet the Minutemen in the championship.
How it Happened
- Towson jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Brendan Sunday drove the goal from the left side and beat Matt DeLuca to the left post.
- Delaware scored back-to-back goals, the first from Dean DiSimone at 4:17 and Will Hirschmann at 2:20. Both goals were unassisted.
- Jean-Luc Chetner banged home another tying goal art 14:07 of the second. The redshirt senior tried the same shot twice, missing high on the first before catching a feed from Johnny Giuffreda at X and hitting a mid-range bouncer for a 2-2 game.
- Delaware regained a one-goal lead at 8:16 on a Joe Eisele goal on a Hirschmann assist.
- The Tigers tied the game again on Sunday's second of the day on a back-handed shot after driving north of goal-line extended and surprising DeLuca at 7:12.
- Towson took a one-goal, 4-3 lead into the break as Grant Maloof caught a feed from Timmy Monahan and blew the leading goal past DeLuca.
- After going 22-of-24 at the X against Delaware in the regular season, Alex Woodall continued his torrid pace against the Blue Hens, winning eight of the first half's nine draws.
- Towson extended the lead early in the second half as Sunday registered the third hat trick of his season at 12:58. His defender slipped on the slick turf and Sunday capitalized with a off-side rip past DeLuca.
- Maloof notched his second and doubled the Tigers' lead with less than four minutes to play in the third quarter. He drove from below goal-line extended and swept past the Delaware defense for a 6-3 Towson lead.
- Phil Wies continued the Tigers' run and capped the third quarter with another off-side snipe. Giuffreda drove from X, drew the double and threw a skip pass over the top to Wies for a 7-3 lead with 41 seconds left in the frame.
- Delaware got its first goal since the 8:16 mark of the second on an extra-man chance after a Koby Smith penalty as the CAA goal-leader Charlie Kitchen broke the Tigers five-goal run.
- The Tigers got one back as Maloof drove towards the goal, kicked it over the frame to Giuffreda who then hit a streaking Jake McLean as the Tigers redoubled their lead, 8-4 at 10:30 of the fourth.
- Delaware scored second extra-man goal at 8:17 on another Eisele marker, cutting the Tigers lead to three at 8-5. After jumping into a 10-man ride, Delaware capitalized on a broken clear for Towson and trimmed the lead to 8-6 on Kitchen's second at 5:21 of the fourth.
- The Hens cut the lead back to one at 8-7 with 3:49 to play in the fourth quarter. Eisele scored his third on an over-the-top feed from Hirschmann.
