Volleyball Sweeps Miami 3-0 in Clásico Opener

BOX SCORE SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Despite an early start to the day and a late match in Puerto Rico, the Towson University women's volleyball team swept ACC foe Miami 3-0 Friday night.

The Tigers (2-2) departed campus around 5:45 a.m. this morning to get to the airport, bound for San Juan for an 8 p.m. EST before besting an ACC program for the second time in as many seasons, sweeping Virginia during last season's campaign. Miami (2-2) is coming off a season in which it advanced in the NCAA Tournament.

How it Happened
  • In the middle of the first set, the Tigers surged past Miami to take a 17-16 lead, forcing Miami to call timeout at Coliseo Rubén Zayas Montañez de Trujillo Alto.
  • Towson needed two points to close out the first set, but the Hurricanes called another timeout with Towson leading 23-22. The Tigers finished the set to take a 25-22 win in their opening game.
  • The Tigers roared into the second set to grab an 8-3 lead before the Hurricanes stopped the action for a timeout.
  • Late in the game, Miami surged closer to Towson to make it 21-16 in favor of the Tigers, forcing head coach Don Metil to call for a break. The Tigers responded and closed the second set 25-20.
  • The third set was tight, with Miami scoring a pair of service aces to make it 9-9. The Hurricanes too a three-point, 17-14 lead before Towson called timeout.
  • Taking a break paid off as the Tigers surged again to grab an 18-17 advantage, forcing Miami's first timeout of the game. The Hurricanes called their final break of the night with Towson leading 23-20 before the Tigers finished the sweep with a 25-22 third-set victory.

Behind the Numbers
  • Olivia Finckel set the pace for Towson's offense as she finished with nine kills and just two errors. Puerto Rico's own Joceyln Kuilan was second for Towson with seven kills on 16 swings (19 percent).
  • Likewise, Annie Ertz finished with seven kills while taking 21 attempts. Ertz and Kuilan eached dropped in a service ace.
  • Marrisa Wonders and Kristin Spengler handed sets, with the latter getting 16 assists while the former dished out 12.
  • Anna Holehouse led Towson with a dozen digs as Wonders neared a double-double with nine digs.

  • Towson returns to the Puerto Rico Clásico on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. EST matchup with Arizona State.
