Volleyball Falls to Ball State in Day Two Opener

TOWSON, Md. -- It was a slow start out of the gate Saturday afternoon for the Towson University women's volleyball team. After falling behind in the first set, the Tigers struggled to get back in control, falling 3-0 at SECU Arena to Ball State in their first match of the day.

Towson (4-8) improved its hitting percentage as the match progressed, swinging just 6.2 percent in the first set before a final set percentage of .227.

Ball State (8-4) hit .254 for the match, winning the sets 25-12, 27-25, 25-18. Two Cardinals had two in double figure kills with Meg Starling leading the match with 12, followed by 11 from Ellie Dunn.

How it Happened
  • Towson had a hard time getting its offense going in the first set as Ball State jumped out to a 12-1 lead. The Tigers looked to climb back in the first set, but the Cardinals held Towson at bay through the remainder of the set to win 25-12.
  • The second set was tighter as the teams tied three times on the first six serves. Towson took its first lead of the match, 6-4 on a Jocelyn Kuilan kill. Late in the set, the teams were tied 22-22 following an Olivia Finckel kill, set up by Kristin Spengler. The Tigers took a 23-22 lead before a service error tied the match again.
  • With the teams tied 25-25, Ball State closed the set with back-to-back points to take a 27-25 win in the second.
  • The third set was another close affair early as the teams were deadlocked 4-4. Ball State ripped off six-straight points to grab a 10-4 lead. The visiting Cardinals held the lead the rest of the way, using several small runs for a 25-18 set win and a 3-0 match win.

Behind the Numbers
  • Finckel led the way for Towson with 11 kills, hitting .250 for the match. Kuilan posted seven kills at a .217 percent clip.
  • Spengler handed out 19 assists while Anna Holehouse finished with 22 digs.
  • Kuilan had the Tigers lone service ace.
  • Ball State hit for .254 in the match, led by a dozen kills from Starling and 11 from Dunn, who hit just .071 for the match on 42 swings.
