TOWSON, Md. – Sunday afternoon the Towson University field hockey team opened its home 2018 season with a game against Sacred Heart, falling 3-2 in hard-fought overtime battle.
The Tigers fall to 0-4 on the season while the Pioneers improve to 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sacred Heart got on the board first in the 16th minute off of a corner stroke and held the lead for 12 minutes before the home team tied it up on a goal from Olivia Blasone assisted by Katie McNeel and Abby Webster.
- Towson scored again just after the half, this time from McNeel from a corner assisted by Jenna Florenzo.
- Only two minutes passed before the Pioneers tied the game up again.
- Both teams held on defensively and helped deflect and prevent shots as time ran down, ending regulation tied 2-2.
- This season there are new overtime rules for field hockey, 10 minutes were put on the clock for the first overtime period which is now sudden death.
- The Tigers and Pioneers each had a couple of opportunities including a corner stroke from the visiting team, but it wasn't until the 76th minute when Bridget Kelly found an opening near the goal and scored the game-winning goal.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- McNeel now has two goals on the season, leading the team in goals and points.
- Bubel led the team with three shots against Sacred Heart.
- Freshman Mackenzie Peacock saw her first collegiate start in the net and came out with four saves.
FROM THE COACH
"We played really hard. We put a little more aggressive pressure on Sacred Heart than we have other teams, we watched them struggle against Georgetown on Friday," said head coach
E.A. Jackson. "Sacred Heart usually plays on water-based turf and they struggled to adjust to the turf field so we changed our game plan a little bit and played a little more aggressively than we have all year. I think it paid off, it generated some great attacking opportunities. I think their goalkeeper did a really nice job of keeping them in the game, and there were some tough calls that didn't go our way, but at the end of the day I'm really proud of how they played."
LOOKING AHEAD
The Tigers remain home this weekend, hosting Rider on Friday at 7 p.m. and LIU Brooklyn Sunday at 1 p.m.
