Volleyball Gets Second Sweep at Clásico With Win Over Xavier

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- For the second time in three days, the Towson University women's volleyball picked up a sweep at the 2018 Puerto Rico Cláscio as the Tigers knocked off Xavier 3-0 Sunday evening in San Juan.

Towson (3-3) was led by Jocelyn Kuilan, whose hometown is 20 minutes from the site of the Clásico, and Olivia Finckel. The pair finished with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. The Tiger attacked was strong on Sunday as Towson hit .404 with 54 kills on 104 attempts.

Xavier (1-4) was led by Laura Grossman, who had 11 kills and swung .276 for the day. It was the second-ever meeting between the programs as Towson leveled the all-time series at 1-1.

How it Happened
  • Early in the first set, the Tigers found themselves in a 12-5 hole, but 9-2 run deadlocked the frame at 14-14. Annie Ertz had the tying-point. Ertz got the kill on the following point as Kristin Spengler put up the assist to give Towson a 15-14 lead.
  • The Musketeers scored a pair of points before Towson tied things at 16-16. The pair of squads went back and forth, tying at 18 before Towson finished off the set with a 7-2 run to win 25-20.
  • In the second set, the Tigers and Musketeers traded blows, tying twice in the first 10 points. Xavier jumped up to an 8-5 lead as Towson pulled back within one at 8-7. The Musketeers held the Tigers at bay, eventually taking a four-point, 13-9 lead.
  • Later in the set, the Musketeers continued to hold off the Tigers, working up to a 24-21 lead. Down late, but with the set point still up for grabs, Towson ripped off four points to tie the match 25-25. A Kuilan kill and and an Xavier attack error gave Towson the win, 27-25.
  • After back-and-forth action in the first two sets, Towson asserted itself in the early goings of the third. Olamide Sonuga put down a kill to give Towson a 6-4 lead before Xavier pulled back within one.
  • The Tigers doubled down on the Musketeers, putting together a 9-3 run for a 15-8 lead. Towson continued its attack, taking an eight-point, 20-12 lead. The big spread was enough as Towson kept the Musketeers at arm's-length to take the third set 25-17.
