Volleyball Sweeps Blue Hens in League Opener

TOWSON, Md. -- Getting Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action off on the right foot, the Towson University women's volleyball squad swept longtime rival Delaware 3-0 Friday night at SECU Arena.

The Tigers (6-8, 1-0 CAA) hit for .229 in the match, including a stout .308 in the deciding set. Towson picked up the sweep thanks to set wins of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-22. The Tigers were big at the net, coming up with 17 block assists on the night.

Delaware (6-7, 0-1 CAA) was limited to just .128 on the attack and was called for four ball-handling errors. The Hens were paced by Maria Bellinger's match-high 13 kills.

How it Happened
  • In the first set, Delaware jumped out to a 3-1 lead early and paced the Tigers over the several points. Towson went on a 6-1 run to wrest a 10-8 lead away from Delaware. Jocelyn Kuilan factored on half the points of the run with two kills and a service ace.
  • Later in the set, Delaware ripped off a 4-0 run to tie things at 13, but Towson responded with a similar run to retake a three-point, 16-13 lead. After back-to-back Blue Hen points cut it to one point, the Tigers reeled off four straight to grab a 20-15 lead. The teams traded blows before a Kristin Spengler dump play secured the first set 25-19 for the Tigers.
  • Again in the second set, Delaware took a small lead early, but steady attacks from the Tigers wore down the Blue Hen defense as Towson took an 11-8 lead. Midway through the set, after both sides traded several points, the Tigers put down three-straight points to go up 15-10.
  • The Tigers held Delaware at bay until a 4-1 Blue Hen run made it a one-point, 21-20 Towson lead. But the Tigers scored four of the final six points in the set to go up 2-0 in the match behind a 25-20 set win.
  • During the timeout between the second and third frames, the Tigers switched into their Autism Awareness jerseys, breaking out the light and dark blue jerseys for the first time in 2018.
  • In the third, it was Towson's turn for a quick lead as the Tigers went up 5-2 in the first seven serves. Delaware surged past Towson on a 4-1 run to snag a one-point, 8-7 lead. Delaware built its lead to three but a six-point Towson run put the home-standing Tigers back on top 14-11.
  • Fighting for a fourth set, Delaware tied the third at 19 and 20 before taking a 21-20 lead. The Tigers knocked down a 4-1 run to secure the match and take the deciding set 25-22 and win their third-straight match over the Blue Hens.
