Football to Wear Special Gold Jerseys for 50th Anniversary Game

TOWSON, Md. – In honor of its 50th season of competition, the Towson University football team will be wearing special gold jerseys for its home opener vs. The Citadel on Saturday, Sept. 29th.

Towson University is celebrating its 50th year of football in 2018.  Since its inception, Towson is the only program in college football to earn playoff berths in Division I FCS, Division II and Division III.  The program has two national runner-up finishes in 1976 and 2013 and earned a top-26 national ranking in 11 different seasons.

"In celebrating our 50th year of football, the throwback uniforms are meant to remind everyone of the past accomplishment of the men who wore the uniform and the teams that have represented the university through the decades," said Rob Ambrose, Towson head coach since 2009. "We are grateful for our administration and Under Armour for working so hard to make this happen."

The uniforms are a throwback to the mid-90s teams, which was ranked in the top-26 in 1993 and 1994.  The gold tops emblazon "Towson" with black numbers outlined in white.  The jerseys are completed with black pants with white stripes on the sides.  The helmets will have the symbolic block T, a staple of Towson helmets in previous seasons.

"These jerseys are symbolic of all Tiger football players, past and present," said Tim Leonard, Towson Director of Athletics.  "They are great representation of our program, honoring those players and coaches who helped us reach this point and those that continue to build our tradition."

"These uniforms are a great tribute to the deep history of Towson football, having a great retro & throwback look with the Black & Gold," said Dan Crowley, Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Development and member of the Towson Hall of Fame as a quarterback. "The players that don these jerseys will be honoring all former Tigers throughout program history."

The jerseys were produced by Under Armour, the official outfitter for Towson Athletics.  Under Armour provides on-field and training gear for Towson's 17 varsity sports.

Fans can help the Tigers celebrate their 50th season with a special $50 season ticket package to all five home games. Those that purchase season tickets have the option of an equal number of road tickets for the Delaware game (Oct. 27, 3:30 p.m.). In honor of the 50th year of football at Towson, fans can purchase season tickets for just $50. Additionally, season tickets in the Gaburick Gold Back Seats are priced at $75.
