TOWSON, Md. - In a dual match that ran late into the night, the Towson University women's tennis team fell to Atlantic 10 foe Richmond, 6-1.
The Tigers fall to 1-5 on the year and will face Hofstra and NJIT next weekend.
How it Happened
- In the first set of doubles play, Alexa Martinez and Yevgeniya Shusterman won 6-4 to start.Â
- Phoebe Collins and Jessica Assenmacher lost their doubles set 6-4, leaving the next doubles win up to the No. 2 slot with Themis Haliou and Lucy Gloninger.
- Haliou twisted her ankle during the game and was able to finish the set but her and Gloninger lost to their opponents 6-4.
- In singles action Collins took a win 6-2, 6-2 and tied the game 1-1 after securing her victory.
- The Tigers would need to win more singles matches to take the dual win overall, but that would not come. Four of the remaining singles matches went to three sets each.
- Martinez fell in the No. 1 spot after taking the win in the second set, she fell in the third 7-5. Shusterman opened her singles match with a 6-4 victory and fell in the second two 3-6, 4-6.
- Gloninger won her first singles set 7-5 and also fell in the second two, while Amelia Lawson also took the first set win and fell 4-6, 1-6 in the final two sets.
From the Coach
"We have played six matches and three of them have been 6-1 finals, but all of them were close and we put ourselves in good positions to win relatively deep in each of those matches," said head coach
Jamie Peterson. "In addition, we lost two extremely close doubles points and won one. The trend has been we have gotten a bit closer with each match and each opponent a bit tougher as well. This was also the first time all year any of our girls played full three-set matches, they fought hard and did a lot of positive things. We will only get better and more match tough as we will probably play more three-set matches in the future. The future looks bright if we stay tough, work hard, and are resilient."Â Â
