Stack and Sulmonte Score Five Each in Towson Win

TOWSON, Md. – Saturday afternoon the Towson University women's lacrosse team hosted Yale in the penultimate non-conference game of the year, taking a 15-13 win.
 
The Tigers were led by Natalie Sulmonte and Shelby Stack with five goals apiece. Towson improves to 2-7 on the year and will host Johns Hopkins next Tuesday in the final non-conference game.
 
How it Happened
  • The Bulldogs struck first, scoring two minutes into the game on an Izzy Nixon goal.
  • Towson responded with Natalie Sulmonte's first goal of the day, 20th of the season.
  • Yale took a one-goal lead one minute later before the home team scored three straight goals, with two from Sulmonte and one from Kaitlin Thornton.
  • Sulmonte had completed a hat trick by the 10-minute mark.
  • The Bulldogs scored three unanswered in the next 10 minutes, regaining the lead 5-4.
  • Sulmonte and Shelby Stack combined for two goals, taking a one-goal lead with 4:49 left in the half.
  • Yale tied the game 6-6 with 3:01 to go in the half. Neither team got a shot off until the 38-second mark when Stack scored for a 7-6 lead before the teams entered the locker room.
  • Thornton scored the first goal of the second half, taking 8-6 lead with 25:56 to go.
  • The next four goals were back and forth as each team scored two goals, resulting in a 10-8 lead for the home team with 20:15 to go.
  • Freshman Kerri Thornton scored her fourth goal of the year extending the lead 11-8.
  • At the 17:49 mark, the Bulldogs scored and tallied another one four minutes later while holding the Tigers from adding to their lead.
  • Towson led 11-10 with 13:22 left and extended to a three-goal lead thanks to Kerri Thornton and Stack.
  • With 3:39 to go, Yale cut the lead to two. Stack's 10th goal of the year put the Tigers up 14-11 with 2:05 on the clock.
  • The Bulldogs did not go quietly, scoring twice more before the final horn but Rayna Deltuva's lone score of the day gave the home team cushion for the win.
Beyond the Box
  • This was Natalie Sulmonte's second consecutive game with five goals. It's also her third of the year with four or more goals.
  • Shelby Stack's five goals are her career-best. She joins Sulmonte and Annie Sachs in tying for the individual season-high.
  • The team's leading scorer, Sulmonte has 24 goals on the year and 28 points following Saturday's win.
  • Freshman Kerri Thornton's two goals puts her at five total for the year, she leads her classmates in scoring.
  • With nine assists on the year, Kaitlin Thornton is sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in assists per game, as she leads the Towson offense.
  • The Thornton sisters combined for four goals and two assists against the Bulldogs, their second time this season with four combined goals, the first was against Saint Joseph's.
  • The nation's leader in caused turnovers per game, Sami Chenoweth, finished with four caused turnovers against Yale. This was her second straight game with four caused turnovers.
