Mid-Game Surges Pushes No. 13 Men’s Lacrosse Past Delaware

NEWARK, Del. -- After trailing by three through 15 minutes, the 13th-ranked Towson University men's lacrosse team stormed past host Delaware for a 14-12 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win on the road.

Towson (8-4, 3-1 CAA) got a six-point, five-goal effort from midfielder Grant Maloof, who scored on all five of his shots on goal. Brendan Sunday chipped in four goals and one assist. After taking a high hit, Towson's All-American faceoff specialist Alex Woodall was spelled by Jack McNallen, who finished the day going 14-of-23 at the X with nine ground balls.

Delaware (10-3, 3-1 CAA) had four-goal days from Dean DiSimone and Joe Eisele. Blue Hen netminder Matt DeLuca, who entered the game averaging nearly 14 saves per game, made just eight stops.

How it Happened
  • Delaware struck first and often in the opening period, out-scoring the Tigers 5-2 in the first 15 minutes. Jake Govett scored for the Hens before Luke Fromert leveled things for Towson a minute later. DiSimone scored for a one-goal lead before Sunday tied things for a second time.
  • The Blue Hens capped the first stanza on a three-goal run from Charlie Kitchen, Clay Miller and DiSimone.
  • Towson answered back with a four-goal burst to open the second quarter. Maloof deposited his first of the day before the Tigers ripped off three-straight extra-man tallies from Sunday, Maloof and Brody McLean for a 6-5 Towson lead.
  • The Blue Hens retook a 7-6 lead on back-to-back goals from Eisele before Sunday and Timmy Monahan scored back-to-back for an 8-7 Towson lead at the break.
  • Towson's surge continued into the second half as Maloof scored back-to-back followed by Sunday and McLean on a feed from non-relative Jake McLean. Maloof soaked an illegal bodycheck, setting up another extra-man chance. The middie cashed in on that chance for his fifth of the day.
  • Delaware made it a two-goal game again as DiSimone, Jackson Finigan, Eisele and DiSimone again scored in succession. Monahan stopped the bleeding for the Tigers with a marker at 5:57 of the fourth. The Blue Hens scored the final goal of the game with 22 seconds to play for a 14-12 final.

Behind The Numbers
  • Maloof finished with a game-best five goals, scoring on all five shots on goal. He had 10 total shots on the day. Sunday was efficient as well, scoring four times on six shots.
  • Woodall went five-for-five in the first quarter at the X with four ground balls before McNallen came in relief.
  • Towson's Tyler Canto made 10 saves in goal, playing in 58 minutes. He was spelled for 90 seconds after taking a cross checking penalty in the first half. Shane Brennan did not make a save in relief.
  • The Tigers' clearing game continued to improve as Towson went 22-of-24. Delaware cleared on all 27 qualifying attempts.
  • Towson collected 36 ground balls while limiting Delaware to 26, aided by a 19-of-28 total day at the faceoff X.
  • Towson's extra-man unit was deadly on Saturday, scoring on all four chances. The Tigers' penalty kill was equally efficient, thwarting all five attempts for the Hens.
