TOWSON, Md. – Down one in the ninth and facing one of the top closers in the league, the Towson University baseball team (12-31, 6-9 CAA) rallied to beat William & Mary (25-19, 7-11 CAA) 4-3 with two ninth innings runs, capped by a
Javon Fields walk-off RBI single.
Beginning with back-to-back walks, Towson begin to rally with a sacrifice bunt by
Trent Gast-Woodard put two in scoring position. An RBI ground out by
Tom Flacco then a single to right by
Javon Fields to score
Jay Sanford gave Towson the 4-3 walk-off victory.
This is the second walk-off victory of the homestand, including the 2-1 extra innings win over Delaware on April 20
th.
Key Stats:
- Richard Miller had a perfect day at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Trent Gast-Woodard had a key RBI double in the seventh and a run, concluding 1-for-2 with a walk. Tom Flacco was 1-for-4 with an RBI while Javon Fields had one hit in five at bats, bringing in the final RBI in the ninth.
- On the mound, Connor Coyle went four innings in his start, having two runs and three strikeouts. Dallas Repine continued with 2.2 innings thrown, allowing one run, while Jake Pecilunas (2-0) notched the victory with two-and-a-third scoreless frames to conclude the game.
- For William & Mary, Matt McDermott was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Starter Zach Tsakounis had a no-decision with 4.2 scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Chris Farrell (3-2) got a loss and a blown save with two runs surrendered in the ninth.
How it Happened:
- William & Mary scored in the opening inning, taking advantage of a walk and hit-by-pitch. Hunter Smith grounded a single up the middle for an RBI, then a Matthew Trehub sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
- Towson threatened in the bottom of the second, getting the bases full after hits by Brad Powers and Richard Miller, but a two-out ground out retired the side with no runs across.
- The Tribe added another run in the fifth as the Tigers kept threatening with runners, including a leadoff double in the fifth by Tom Flacco, but William & Mary held a 3-0 lead.
- The home team got its first runs of the afternoon in a big way in the bottom of the seventh, beginning with a leadoff single to right by Miller. Trent Gast-Woodard followed with a ground ball down the left field line for a double to score Miller, then a throwing error awarded home to Gast-Woodard, cutting the deficit to one run.
- Jake Pecilunas held down the Tribe in the late innings, stranding multiple runners in scoring position to keep the deficit at one. Into the ninth, Jack Rotteveel and Miller drew four-pitch walks, then Jay Sanford pinch ran at first. After Gast-Woodard sacrificed himself to put two in scoring position, Flacco brought in the tying run on a ground out towards first. Now with Sanford on third, Javon Fields hit a flare down the right-field line over the outstretched arm of the diving second baseman for the single, scoring Sanford for the 4-3 walk-off.

- Today win snapped a three-game losing streak against CAA competition.
- Tom Flacco had a role in each walk-off win this homestand, stealing home to win vs. Delaware and bringing in the tying run today on a ground out.
