Towson Falls to Hofstra in CAA Semifinal

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Friday night's semifinal game against Hofstra on the campus of James Madison resulted in an 11-8 loss for the Towson University women's lacrosse team.
 
The Tigers were led by Kaitlin Thornton with three goals and Shelby Stack with two goals and three assists.
 
How it Happened
  • Freshman Kerri Liucci started the day with the first goal of the night, assisted by Shelby Stack, taking a 1-0 lead with 28:50 on the clock for the first half.
  • Back-and-forth scoring ensued as the Pride scored the next two followed by two straight Tiger goals from Kaitlin Thornton and Stack each.
  • After reaching a 4-4 stalemate with 11:16 remaining in the first half, the game entered a lightning delay that lasted two hours and four minutes.
  • At approximately 9:20 p.m. the teams returned to the field and the Pride scored two unanswered to take a 6-4 lead into the locker room.
  • Kaitlin Thornton scored the first goal of the second half, cutting the lead to one, assisted by Shelby Stack. The second period continued in back and forth scoring.
  • Hofstra took a 7-5 lead with 28:46 remaining and neither team saw the back of the net for the next nine minutes before Shelby Stack broke the silence.
  • With 19:27 to go, Towson trailed 7-6. The Pride scored the next two goals, taking a 9-6 lead with 13:08 remaining.
  • Annie Sachs scored next for the Tigers, cutting the lead to two with just over eight minutes to go. Kaitlin Thornton scored next, putting Towson within one of tying the game and 6:08 on the clock.
  • Hofstra scored next one minute later and put in the 11th goal with 4:13 remaining, forcing a Tiger timeout.
  • Towson had two shots in the final four minutes but was unable to find the back of the net.
Beyond the Box
  • Shelby Stack's three assists are a career-high for the junior.
  • This was Kaitlin Thornton's fifth hat trick of the year and her first game with three or more goals since scoring five against William & Mary earlier this season.
  • Kerri Liucci and Kerri Thornton both scored their first career goals of a conference tournament Friday.
  • Towson's defense caused 10 of Hofstra's 21 turnovers in the game.
