Weyman's Complete Game Not Enough in Baseball's Narrow Defeat at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Towson University baseball team (12-33, 6-11 CAA) saw Gavin Weyman earn his first complete game of the season, but host James Madison (27-19, 8-9 CAA) took the 1-0 win after a seventh inning solo home run.

Weyman (3-7) pitched eight innings for Towson, holding JMU to three total hits as the game remained scoreless through six.  A Brady Harju solo home run in the seventh ultimately proved the difference.

Key Stats:
  • Gavin Weyman's (3-7) line was eight innings, three hits and seven strikeouts in a 116-pitch day.
  • Towson outhit JMU 5-3 in this game, with eight baserunners to JMU's six.  Five different Tigers hit safely in this contest; no player, Tiger or Duke, had more than one hit in this game.
  • Trent Gast-Woodard reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk, as did Noah Cabrera on a 1-for-3 afternoon with a hit-by-pitch.  Each Dirk Masters and Brad Powers were 1-for-4 with a double.
  • For JMU, Harju's home run was his seventh of the season.  The win went to reliever Shelton Perkins (3-1), who pitched the final four innings with no hits and six strikeouts.
How it Happened:
  • The game started as a pitching duel, with Gavin Weyman and Nick Stewart going scoreless in the first six innings.  Towson had second and third with two outs in the top of the second, but a well-hit line drive went directly to the first baseman to end the inning.  Again, the Tigers threatened in the top of the fourth, getting the bases jammed with two away, but a fly out ended the inning.
  • Towson had a chance to break the deadlock in the sixth inning, using a Brad Powers double and a Trent Gast-Woodard walk for two men on and none out.  JMU induced a fielder's choice, fly out and strikeout to keep the score at 0-0.
  • James Madison scored first in the bottom of the seventh off a solo home run by Brady Harju to lead 1-0.
  • Towson attempted to come back, but was unable to break Shelton Perkins and fell 1-0.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Gavin Weyman earns the first complete game in a Towson contest this year by either the Tigers or the opponent.
  • Weyman had his fifth start this season where he pitched at least six innings and allowed one run or fewer.
  • With a hit today, Dirk Masters has reached base in his last nine games.
Up Next:
Towson and James Madison complete the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.
