Tiger Pair Earns USA National Team Tryout

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- After outstanding careers for the Towson University women's volleyball program, Olivia Finckel and Marrisa Wonders have been selected to join the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts.

The Tryouts will be held at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado Feb. 21-23. 

Finckel and Wonders are two of 214 athletes from 94 colleges aiming to join the US National Team. Finckel is one of 24 opposite hitters to earn a tryout while Wonders is one of 37 setters. The Tigers will not be the only representation from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) at the Tryouts; James Madison associate head coach Casey Steinbrecher will be serve as an evaluator.

At stake are potential spots on U.S. Women's National Team and 56 spots on the U.S. Collegiate National Team programs Plus, four athletes are trying out for the U.S. Women's Junior National Team that will compete in the 2020 NORCECA Women's U20 Continental Championship. (From USA Volleyball).

Beginning on Friday, Feb. 21 USA Volleyball will begin a live stream of the Tryouts through TeamUSA.org.

Despite a hand injury early in the season AVCA All-America Honorable Mention Wonders, the 2019 CAA Player and Setter of the Year, capped her career with 1,289 assists this season, averaging 11.51 per set. Her per-set average ranks ninth in the country and is best among AVCA East Region setters, earning her VolleyballMag.com All-America Fourth Team honors. Wonders ran a versatile offense, pushing five different players over 200 kills. Towson was one of three NCAA Tournament teams to enter the bracket with five 200-plus killers. Wonders' 1,289 assists this season ranks eighth for a single season in program history and are the most in the 25-point rally era. Additionally, Wonders posted 17 double-doubles this season, grabbing a team second-best 320 digs at a 2.86 per-set average. She aided on 37 blocks as well, posting a pair of single stops.

Finckel, a VolleyballMag.com All-America Honorable Mention selection, was one of the Tigers' most versatile players this season, logging 344 kills at a 3.10 per-set rate. As a right-sider, she led Towson's outside hitters with a .250 hitting percentage. On the defensive side, the Dulaney High School product knocked down 122 opponent attempts, averaging 1.10 blocks per set, ranking in the top five among CAA players. The 6-foot, 2-inch Finckel posted 100 digs in her senior season, averaging nearly a dig per set.
