Towson Baseball Late Rally Comes Up Short in Defeat at No. 7 Miami

MIAMI – A Towson University baseball team ninth-inning rally came up short as the Tigers fell in the Saturday contest to No. 7 Miami 8-2.

Towson (2-6) faced an early deficit as Miami (6-3) scored a combined seven runs in the opening two innings.  The Tigers looked to rally, putting runners into scoring position in four innings.  Towson got a pair of runs across in the ninth on a Matt Arceo RBI ground out and a Javon Fields RBI single, but the Tigers could not get closer.

Key Stats:
  • Towson outhit Miami in the game 8-6 with the Tigers allowing just two hits after the second inning.
  • Two Tigers earn multi-hit performances: Javon Fields reached base three times in a 2-for-4 night, earning an RBI, while Colin Conroy also got on base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • On the mound, the loss went to Nick Ramanjulu (1-2) with 5.2 innings pitched, having eight runs charged, just five earned, with two strikeouts.  Matt Watters came in relief and threw two-and-a-third scoreless, striking out three.
  • Miami hit two home runs in the game, a two-run by Alex Toral in the first and a three-run by Anthony Vilar in the second.  Starter Chris McMahon (2-0) picked up the victory, throwing 6.2 scoreless innings and striking out 12.
How it Happened:
  • Miami scored four runs in the opening inning, taking advantage of two fielding errors and a two-run home run by Alex Toral.  The home team added a three-run home run in the next inning by Anthony Vilar, to lead 7-0 after two.
  • Towson threatened in the top of the third, putting the bases loaded after a two-out bunt single by Matt Arceo, but a ground out finished the inning without a run.
  • Nick Ramanjulu recovered and earned 1-2-3 innings the next three frames.  The Tigers again got a pair of two-out runners off a Javon Fields single and a Brad Powers walk, but they were stranded after a flyout.
  • Miami added back a run in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI walk to make it 8-0 Hurricanes.
  • With Matt Watters holding the fort in relief, Towson attempted a final rally in the top of the ninth.  Hits from Nick Brown, Nick Tiano and Colin Conroy loaded the bases with one out.  Arceo brought in a run on a ground out, then Fields beat out a throw to first for an RBI single.  Towson could not complete the rally after a pop out and fell 8-2.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Javon Fields has earned multi-hit performances in three of his last four games.
  • Matt Watters has appeared in relief four times this season, combining for no runs in 5.2 innings.
  • With a pinch-hit single in the ninth, Nick Tiano earned his first hit as a Tiger.
