Women’s Lacrosse Leaps Past High Point for First Win

TOWSON, Md. -- The Towson University women's lacrosse team was leaping for joy as the Tigers picked up their first win of the season on Feb. 29, using the extra day of the year to best High Point 12-11 at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.

Towson (1-3) had a pair of hat tricks from senior Shelby Stack and rookie Blair Pearre. Kerri Liucci dished out two assists while Abbe Mona notched two goals for the Tigers. Freshman netminder Carly Merlo made seven saves in her first career victory.

It was a decisive six-goal run in the second half for the Tigers that helped Towson collect its first victory, getting two goals apiece in the burst from Pearre and Stack.

High Point (1-3) had a four-goal outing from Ashley Britton as Nicole Pugh and Rachel Foster logged two goals apiece. Britton finished with a five-point day with one assist while Meredith Chapman and Nicole Pugh posted helpers as well.

How it Happened
  • The Panthers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals from Pugh and Foster at 27:59 and 24:38, respectively.
  • Towson cut the lead in half as Kerri Thornton buried her fifth of the season on a feed from Kerri Liucci. High Point extended its lead back two on a marker from Britton with Chapman on the back end.
  • Stack pulled town back to within one of the Panthers as she stuck a free position shot five hole on High Point keeper Sarah Zeto. Britton scored her second of the day with just under seven minutes to play in the half, which proved to be High Points last goal of the first 30 minutes.
  • Towson leaped past the Panthers with three straight goals from three different sources. Porter slide past her defender for a marker near goal-line extended. 
  • Mona snuck a free position shot past Zeto that trickled over the line before Pearre notched her ninth of the year with two minutes to go for a 5-4 Towson lead at the break.
  • Opening the second half, High Point ripped off three goals in the first two minutes from Pugh, Loescher and Hormes. The Tigers responded in kind with a three goal run of their own as Stack, Pearre and Mona all buried their second of the day for an 8-7 lead, forcing a High Point timeout.
  • Towson capped its run at six straight as Pearre logged a hat trick with follow up goals from Carly Tellekamp and Kaitlin Thornton. Porter and Kerri Liucci had the assists on the last two goals of the run.
  • The Panthers stuck back-to-back goals within a minute to whittle the Tigers lead down to 11-9. Chapman and Britton scored in succession before Towson halted the mini run with Stack's third of the afternoon at 8:58 of the half.
  • Trailing by two, High Point kept things interesting late as the Panthers buried the final two goals of the day from Britton and Foster at 2:20 and with 23 seconds left in the game. 
  • Towson's defense held steady over the final few minutes of the day with three caused turnovers by Stack, Pearre and Sami Chenoweth. Merlo made a huge free-position save with 6:14 to play to preserve her first career win.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson out-shot the Panthers 29-25, including 17-12 in the first half. The Tigers controlled time of possession thanks to a 21-of-23 day in transition. Towson's ride held the Panthers to 17 successful clears on 22 chances.
  • The Tigers converted on five of their 11 free-position chances, including two-for-two from Stack and a two-for-three outing from Mona.
  • Merlo made seven saves in her first career win, halting four in the first and another three in the second half. Zeto was the goalie of credit for High Point, playing 48 minutes with nine saves. Jill Rall played in the final 12 minutes of the contest.
  • Pearre finished with three goals, her third-straight hat trick this season. She has multiple goals in all four games for the Tigers this season. Stack added her second hat trick of the season, joining her three against Penn State in the season opener.
  • Towson committed just 14 turnovers in the game while the visitors had 21 miscues, including 11 in the decisive second half.
  • Towson picked up its first win of the 2020 season, halting a three-game slide.
  • The Tigers remain unbeaten on Leap Day, pairing Saturday's win with an 11-3 victory over UMBC during the 2012 campaign.
