TOWSON, Md. – With the COVID-19 virus keeping students off-campus for the remainder of the spring 2020 term, the Towson University department of athletics is working with the Tutoring & Learning Center (TLC) on campus to help the student-athletes.
Several student-athletes have tutoring sessions during the season to help with academics in-season plus during the offseason. With all students being off campus, the TLC is assisting with online tutoring sessions to keep academic assistance going for athletes across all sports.
The TU TLC is a learning center that provides services for Towson student to achieve academic goals, headquartered in the Cook Library.
The virtual tutoring sessions run through WebEx or Blackboard Collaborate in conjunction with Towson University. Elysa Newman, Towson Athletics director of academic achievement, has been working with TLC director Liz Scarbrough and Writing Center director Wayne Robertson to help student-athletes take advantage of the online sessions.
"During this confusing time for our Towson student-athletes, we wanted to create an environment that promoted a seamless transition to online distance learning," said Newman. "Those who need tutoring or writing assistance now have the opportunity to utilize services and resources from our campus partners at the TU TLC and the TU Writing Center, both launching virtual sessions to meet the students' needs as Spring Break ended until the end of the semester. We are grateful for this collaboration in order to help our student-athletes succeed academically.
During the Fall 2019 semester, 246 Towson student-athletes were placed on the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll while 37 football student-athletes earned a spot on the CAA Football Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible, student-athletes must compete in a CAA-sponsored sport and be a full-time student who attained at least a 3.0 grade point average.
