Smith Honored with 2020 USM Regents’ Staff Award

BALTIMORE – Towson University Senior Assistant A.D. for the Total Tiger Program Antwaine Smith has been recognized with the 2020 University System of Maryland (USM) Regents' Staff Award, announced by the Board of Regents.

The USM Regents' Staff Award is the highest honor given by the system, presented by the Board of Regents to exemplary staff members.  Smith was honored for Extraordinary Public Service to the University or the Greater Community.

"It is truly an honor and humbling to receive the USM Board of Regents Award," said Smith. "The commitment of the student-athletes, coaches, staff and administration to engaging the Greater Baltimore area has been an amazing experience. It allows us to demonstrate our commitment to being good neighbors and develop our student-athletes in a positive and meaningful way that will serve not only themselves but their respective communities in the future as great global citizens."

Smith leads the Total Tiger Program and coordinates community service for Towson student-athletes and staff.  Towson Athletics personnel complete over 10,000 hours of community service each year, leading to the department earning the NCAA Team Works Helper Helper National Championship for community service in Fall 2018.

Smith has been a part of Towson Athletics since 2011 and has led Towson to be of the top athletic departments in the country in giving back to the community.

From the USM Press Release:

Antwaine's commitment to weaving service into the student athlete experience has grown significantly. TU student-athletes now complete 10,000 hours of service annually.  Perhaps more importantly, this focus on service is now a core function of the Athletic Department at TU, with student- athletes embracing service as something they truly enjoy. Additionally, Antwaine focuses on social justice issues on a national level through educational programs around diversity and inclusion, organizational leadership, and gender violence prevention. As a native of Baltimore, Antwaine is helping student-athletes at TU become service leaders who will continue to have a huge impact on Maryland and beyond.

USM Chancellor Dr. Jay A. Perman and Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden will offer notice of the awards on Sept. 18.

"I could not be prouder of our TU honorees for their well deserved and prestigious recognition by the USM Board of Regents," says TU President Kim Schatzel in a university press release. "It is always an honor to have the excellence of Towson University acknowledged, and it is truly special that these honors come from our governing board."
