Volleyball’s Second Come-Back Bid Falls Short

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- A second reverse sweep in as many days was not in the cards for the Towson University women's volleyball team, which dropped a 3-2 decision at College of Charleston Sunday afternoon.

Less than 24 hours after a reverse sweep the Tigers (17-3, 5-3 CAA) found themselves in a similar situation. Charleston won the first two sets before Towson took sets three and four. The Cougars fought off a late Towson rally to win the match 25-21, 25-19, 16-25, 21-25, 15-12.

Towson had a career effort from Fay Bakodimou, who dropped in 18 kills alongside four service aces. Emily Jarome added her 12th career double-double with 15 kills and 14 while Rachel Hess snarred a match-high 23 digs.

Charleston (11-8, 4-4 CAA) split the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) weekend at TD Arena, getting 13 kills from Lexi Wierzbicki and another 10 from Claire Campbell. The homestanding Cougars landed 11 service aces, including match point from Tynley Smeltzer. Gabi Bailey added a team-best 13 digs as Charleston finished with 14 total blocks.

How it Happened
  • Charleston took a 9-2 lead early in the first set, repeating Towson's slow start from Saturday. Later in the frame, Towson managed a 5-1 run to cut the lead down to two at 13-11 Charleston. Bakodimou landed an ace to cap the run.
  • The Cougars built a 20-13 lead on the back of a 5-1 run of their own before getting to set point, 24-18. Towson made a valiant effort at a first-set comeback, running off a 3-0 streak on Charleston's set point, but a service error from Towson put the Tigers down 1-0 in the match.
  • Set two was back-and-forth early with five ties in the first 10 points. Towson pulled back from a two-point deficit to tie the set again at 9-9, but that would be the final tie of the frame. The Cougars went on a 6-1 run to gain a 15-10 lead before the Tigers landed four unanswered to push things to 15-14 Charleston.
  • The sides traded errors through the later portions of the set as Towson made it a one-point set again at 20-19 in favor of Charleston. The Cougars won the set behind a 5-0 push, however, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Facing similar odds as the day before, Towson dominated set three from the jump, taking a 13-3 lead early, including a 5-0 run to start the set. Outside of a 4-0 run in the middle of the set, Charleston struggled to connect points as Towson put together several small bursts to edge out to a 19-13 lead. A 6-3 run for the Tigers capped the set at 25-16, with Irbe Lazda landing the set point and trimming the Cougar lead down to 2-1.
  • Set four was a see-saw affair as the Tigers took a 7-4 lead before Charleston surged to an 8-7 advantage. Charleston worked up a two-point, 13-11 lead before a 5-1 Towson run, including an ace from Lydia Wiers, put the Tigers back up by three, 17-14.
  • Charleston pulled back to a one-point set at 20-19 but a 5-2 run for the Tigers with five different players getting kills, tied the match at 2-2 after a 25-21 set win, pushing the teams to a fifth set for the second time in two days.
  • The Tigers fell behind quickly in set five, down 6-1 on the first seven points and eventually trailed 8-3. Towson surged past the Cougars on an 6-0 run to snag a 9-8 lead. Charleston strung together a 3-0 run to regain an 11-9 lead. The Tigers tied the set at 11-11 but a 4-1 Charleston run ended Towson's comeback bid at 15-11 in the fifth set.
Behind the Numbers
  • Bakodimou landed a career-best 18 kills on 42 swings with seven errors, finishing with a .262 hitting efficiency. Her previous high kill total was 15 set early this season in a five setter at Hofstra.
  • Jarome added her second double-double in as many days, collecting 15 kills and hitting at .250 with another 14 digs to her credit. Hess managed a game-best 23 digs while added four assists and one ace to her afternoon.
  • Bakodimou landed another four service aces, bringing her season total to 42. She has at least three aces in each of the Tigers' last five matches. She finished with seven aces at TD Arena this weekend.
  • Megan Wilson pushed up a team-high 26 assists while Kristin Spengler added another 22.
  • Nikia Mitchell was again a force at the net, putting down six total blocks after an eight-block performance on Saturday. The middle blocker has at least three blocks in seven of the Tigers' eight CAA matches this season. Lazda finished second for the Tigers with four total blocks.
  • Sunday's result ended a four-match winning streak for the Tigers against the College of Charleston.
