Banks First Half Goal Not Enough as Towson Women's Soccer Falls at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University women's soccer team had the early lead on a Khori Banks goal but fell on the road to Delaware 2-1 on Thursday night.
 
Towson (7-6-3, 2-4-1 CAA) outshot Delaware (5-8-2, 2-2-2 CAA) 14-6 in the contest, including 10-2 in the second half, but the Blue Hens converted on both of its shots on goal to get the win.
 
Key Stats:
  • Along with the shot advantage, Towson also picked up seven corner kicks to Delaware's zero.
  • Khori Banks scored her fourth goal of the season in the 28th minute off a pass from Riley Rumbley, who got her third assist of the year.
  • Jasmine Hamid led all players with six shots, putting two on goal, while Nia Christopher had three shots total.
  • The loss in goal went to Riley Melendez (7-6-3) with two goals allowed.
  • The Blue Hens won off goals from Raychel Speicher in the 30th minute and Kate Henesey in the 58th minute, assisted by Anna Diffendal and Lauren Elwell respectively.  Lauren Krinsky (5-7-1) picked up the win with three saves and a goal allowed.
How It Happened:
  • The game started back-and-forth in the midfield, with neither team recording a shot in the opening 16 minutes.  Anna Diffendal had the first shot of the game for Delaware, firing long range and missing right.
  • Towson picked up a corner kick in the 21st minute, with Delaware clearing away the cross.  Phoebe Canoles attempted to get the ball back with a long-range shot, missing left of the post.
  • Minute 28 saw Towson run down the field with a 4-on-3.  Riley Rumbley got deep into the box and attempt a shot, being blocked.  She pushed the ball to Khori Banks, who made her shot close range in the bottom left to make it 1-0 Towson.
  • Two minutes later, Delaware took advantage on a breakaway and scored to even the game at 1-1.
  • Towson got players into the box for a chance in the 39th minute as a pass towards the right side came to Nia Christopher.  Christopher's low shot was scooped up by Lauren Krinsky for the save.  The two sides went into the break tied at one.
  • A series of passes in transition led to a shot by Jasmine Hamid in the 49th minute, missing high.
  • Delaware got a free kick around midfield after a foul.  Laurel Elwell sent the ball all the way to the box to Kate Henesey, who scored off the first touch close range in the left post to give Delaware a 2-1 advantage in the 58th minute.
  • Towson ratcheted up the pressure in the attempt to equalize, picking up a pair of corners in the 61st minute.  A cross from Alexandra Rush to Hamid resulted in a header just high.
  • Towson pushed forward in the 68th minute as Rush led the Tigers down the right side.  Hamid got the pass and fired, slamming the crossbar on the shot.  A second attempt by Demi Pierre missed right.
  • In the 80th minute, another chance for Hamid on a blazing line drive, with the keeper sending it away.  The resulting corner and second chance for Hamid was a header high.
  • Towson kept on the pressure, but Delaware's defense held.  A final corner kick by Christopher was cleared out as Delaware took the victory 2-1.
Inside the Numbers
  • Towson has outshot its opponent in 10 out of 16 games this season.
  • Khori Banks nets her first goal since Oct. 3 vs. William & Mary.
