Volleyball Picks Up Tight Sweep at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- It was another fight to the finish for the Towson University women's volleyball team as the Tigers collected their second-straight win at William & Mary in a 24 hour window Saturday evening at Kaplan Arena.

Towson (19-3, 7-3 CAA) earned every bit of the sweep against the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival, winning 25-21, 27-25, 25-23 on the road in an action-pack Towson weekend in Historic Williamsburg.

Emily Jarome tucked away another 12 kills, finishing with a .303 hitting percentage. She paired her offense with four service aces and six digs. Fay Bakodimou rebounded from a slower start with eight kills, adding another assist while Rachel Hess posted a team-best 15 digs.

William & Mary (3-12, 0-10 CAA) got 14 kills from Julia Brown, who hit a match-best .542 with just one error on 24 swings. Kate Van Houten posted a match-high 33 assists. The Tribe out-blocked Towson with eight total stops, including four from Brown. The Tribe bounced back with a .185 hitting percentage after being limited to .056 Friday night.

How it Happened
  • In the first set, William & Mary jumped out to a 6-2 lead early, getting four kills from three different sources. Towson responded with an 8-1 run to take back the lead 10-7.
  • After the sides traded chances to a 12-10 Towson advantage, the Tigers put together a 5-0 run to go up 17-10, eventually building a 20-12 lead.
  • It was enough distance to keep the Tribe at bay, despite a 3-0 run late from the homeside as Towson picked up the set win 25-20.
  • Set two was a different story, featuring 15 ties and six lead changes. It was a tight set from the first serve as neither side could gain more than a three-point lead, with Towson leading 11-8.
  • But the tide changed in the Tribe's favor as William & Mary strung a 6-0 run together for a 14-11 lead and a Towson timeout.
  • The pause in action worked in the Tigers' favor as Towson ripped off a 4-0 run out of the break for a 15-14 lead, scoring kills from Kristin Spengler and Lydia Wiers, coupled with a block by Wiers and Morgan Wilson.
  • William & Mary reached set point 24-23 before a Jarome kill deadlocked the frame 24-24. A service error put the Tribe back on set point and pushed Towson into another timeout.
  • Again the tactic worked as the Tigers came out with a 3-0 run to collect the 27-25 set win. William & Mary called a last-second timeout with Towson leading 26-25, looking to freeze Wiers on the service line. The junior landed a service ace to get the win.
  • The Tribe went up early in the third set yet again, a narrow 3-1 advantage as Towson clawed back for a 4-3 lead. A 5-1 William & Mary run put the home team up 8-5 and kept the Tigers down until it was 12-9.
  • From there, Towson went on a 5-0 run to regain a two-point, 14-12 lead, capped by a solo stuff from Sara Wasiakowska.
  • William & Mary put down a 4-1 run to take back a 17-16 lead, building to a 20-18 advantage. Overcoming service struggles, Jarome put the Tigers on her back and landed three aces in a 5-0 run, adding a kill in the mix, to put Towson up 23-20.
  • Fighting back, William & Mary scored a 3-0 flourish to deadlock the set 23-23, looking to push to a fourth set. An attack error put Towson up 24-23 before a final block from Bakodimou and Nikiya Mitchell ended the match with a 25-23 decision.
Behind the Numbers
  • Jarome had her second-straight match with a dozen kills against the Tribe, adding to her total from Friday night. Her four service aces tied a season high set in the second match of the year against Cleveland State back on August 28.
  • Bakodimou knocked down eight kills on 19 swings, overcoming a slow start with a negative hitting percentage. She landed one ace, her seventh-straight match with at least one service ace.
  • Towson's versatile offense saw seven Tigers score multiple kills, including both setters, Kristin Spengler and Megan Wilson. The former added 18 assists with her two kills while the latter had 10 assists and three kills of her own.
  • Coming off a 23-dig performance on Friday, Hess notched another 15 digs Saturday evening.
  • Towson has won 14 straight matches against William & Mary, dating back to Oct. 11, 2014. Towson has won its last eight matches at Kaplan Arena.
