Volleyball Cools Off Elon in Four

TOWSON, Md. -- Less than 24 hours after suffering its first league loss at home in over two years, the Towson University women's volleyball bounced back to cool off league-leading Elon University in four sets.

Towson (16-2, 4-2 CAA) put together three strong sets Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena, securing the win 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, avenging yesterday's four-set loss against the same Phoenix.

Lydia Wiers had a bounce-back match, scoring 14 kills on 21 swings with just two errors, hitting for a team-best .571. Irbe Lazda touched down 13 kills while Morgan Wilson added 10 terminating swings off the bench. Kristin Spengler and Megan Wilson split time, adding 28 and 22 assists, respectively. Wiers accounted for four total blocks, including three assisted stops. Lazda had an equal number of assisted blocks.

Elon (10-6, 5-1 CAA) suffered its first league loss this season, ending a 5-0 start in CAA action. Preseason Player of the Year Leah Daniel notched 18 kills, taking 34 swings to do so. She hit for .353 in the match. Setter Haylie Clark put up 44 assists, while adding eight sneaky kills of her own. Jordan Gower had a match-best 16 digs for the Phoenix.

How it Happened
  • Set one continued yesterday's slow finish for the Tigers, who trailed 6-3 early before falling behind 8-4. The veteran Tigers stayed within striking distance, however, eventually putting together a 6-0 run to take a 15-12 lead.
  • Elon threatened a few points later, with Towson leading 16-15, but another 4-0 surge from the Tigers added up to a 20-15 lead. After the visitors cobbled together a 3-0 run to make it 20-18 Towson, the Tiger defense kept Elon from scoring more than two straight points. Fay Bakodimou logged the final two points of the set, scoring a kill followed by a set walk-off ace for the 25-22 decision.
  • Towson found itself in a small 3-1 hole early in set two but a 4-1 run changed the tide in Towson's favor to a 5-4 lead.
  • Both sides traded points before Elon put together a 5-1 run to take a 13-11 lead. Later, Towson put down a 5-1 run of its own, wresting control back at 18-16. The Phoenix tied the set once more at 18-18 but it was Towson's defense that stymied Elon late in the set. Bakodimou and Nikiya Mitchell combined for the final two kills of the set and a second-straight 25-22 decision.
  • Unlike the first two sets, the third was all Towson early as the Tigers went up 6-1 and 8-2.
  • The Tigers assumed a 15-9 lead midway through the frame, but the Phoenix charged back with a 5-0 run to pull within one at 15-14 Towson.
  • Towson held a small three-point lead at 17-14, but Elon strung together seven unanswered points for a 21-17. A 3-0 run late put the Tigers within one point, 22-21, but Elon took the set behind a 3-0 surge for a 25-21 decision. Towson led 2-1 after three sets.
  • Another four-set match between two balanced teams felt inevitable. The fourth was close early, with five ties and five lead changes by the time it was tied 9-9.
  • Towson put away a 7-1 run for a 16-10 lead, getting two kills each from Wiers and Emily Jarome in the run. Elon had one last gasp on a 3-0 run to make it 19-15 Towson, but once again the Tigers finished strong and did not allow any runs. Jarome had the match-winning kill, splitting the weekend results between the teams.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson hit well in sets one, two and four, going well over .300 in those sets. Towson was limited to a .083 in the third set, however. Towson hit .282 for the match while Elon was held in check at .258.
  • Both teams were even throughout, combining for 20 ties and nine lead changes, including 11 and 5, respectively, in the second set. Over the weekend, there were 35 ties and 15 lead changes.
  • Wiers led Towson with 14, a season best for the junior middle. Lazda added 13 kills, her first double-digit effort as a Tiger. Morgan Wilson added 10 kills off the bench along with two blocks. Wiers and Lazda scored four and three total blocks, respectively.
  • Jarome led Towson with 10 digs. Towson was balanced on the back row on Sunday, getting multiple dig days from six different players.
  • Elon nearly doubled Towson on the block, however, getting 11 total blocks in the match. Jenn Krzeminski led the match with seven total blocks while Natalie Cummins and Sydney Love added four apiece.
  • Towson improved to 15-2 all-time against the Phoenix in a series that dates back to the 1998 campaign. The Tigers have never dropped back-to-back matches against Elon.
  • The Tigers' win assures that no team will finish unbeaten in league play this fall, leaving Towson's perfect 16-0 record in 2019 to continue as an untied CAA record.
  • The Tigers have not dropped back-to-back losses since the end of September 2018. Since then, the Tigers have won their last 11 matches after suffering a loss.
