WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite falling on a golden goal at UNCW today 1-0, the Towson University women's soccer team finishes the year with its first winning season since 2007.
Towson (8-7-3, 3-5-1 CAA) forced overtime against the league's first-place team in UNCW (11-3-1, 7-2 CAA), outshooting the Seahawks in the game. Kara Mills scored in the 94
th minute to give the Seahawks the win and the CAA regular season title.
Key Stats:
- Towson outshot UNCW 10-9 in the game, including attempting nine shots in the first half of play. Four Tigers had two shots each: Phoebe Canoles, Nia Christopher, Jasmine Hamid and Demi Pierre.
- The defeat in goal went to Riley Melendez (8-7-3) despite four saves and a goal allowed in overtime.
- Kara Mills's goal was her first of the season. In goal, Kaylie Bierman had a scoreless first half with three saves, with Blair Barefoot getting the win off playing the second half and overtime with a save.
How It Happened:
- Needing a victory, Towson was the early aggressor on offense. Demi Pierre took aim from the right side in the fifth minute, missing high. A counter effort by UNCW saw Audrey Harding going long range, missing right.
- In the 10th minute, Towson picked up a counterattack led by a racing Phoebe Canoles. A first chance by Canoles was blocked, then a second effort by Jasmine Hamid resulted in a high shot.
- Pierre set up another chance for Towson in the 22nd minute on a run down the right side. A cross to the middle found Hamid, with a shot attempt being saved right side.
- Towson drew a free kick from about 30 yards out in the 25th minute. Nia Christopher blasted a ground ball to the left post, being saved by Kaylie Bierman. UNCW got a counterattack, with a shot from Kayla Burroughs straight away being saved. A second effort was blocked away for a corner, with Riley Melendez grabbing the cross to prevent another shot.
- The Tigers got some long range looks in the later minutes of the half from Christopher, Canoles, Khori Banks and Alexandra Rush, with all going wide. The two sides went into halftime in a scoreless stalemate.
- Each went back-and-forth in the midfield in the early minutes of the second half as Towson tried to break through. A chance came in the 61st minute as Jenna Blank and Christopher went down the field. Christopher lined up 15 yards out and fired, being halted by Blair Barefoot on the right post.
- Towson kept getting good passes off in the midfield as both sides tried to break through the other's defense, without many chances. In the 84th minute, UNCW got a ball to fall in the box on a corner kick, with the Tigers clearing out the chance. The two sides remained scoreless after regulation play.
- Towson picked up a corner kick chance early in overtime, which was cleared out by UNCW. On the counter, Kayla Burroughs found Kara Mills on the through ball. Mills shot and scored off the first touch to give UNCW the 1-0 win.
