TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's basketball team put three players in double figures in its return to SECU Arena but fell to the league's first-place team Northeastern 76-67 on Saturday afternoon.

Towson battled to a near tie in the first half against the Huskies at 39-38, but Northeastern broke away in the second period to win.

  • Northeastern: 9-6, 8-1 CAA

  • Towson won the battle in the paint with 36 points to NU's 30 and had the stronger scoring bench, getting 22 points from reserves to seven for Northeastern.
  • For the Huskies, Tyson Walker tallied up 36 points, going 13-for-20 from the field and 7-for-12 from three, with five assists and two steals.
Postgame Quote:
Towson head coach Pat Skerry: "We had a slow start to the second half, and had some moments that hurt ourselves in transition.  We had some good play from Jakigh [Dottin] with a good week of practice, good to get Solomon [Uyaelunmo] back.  [Walker] is a good shooter, it makes them a tough team to defend."

How it Happened:
  • Tyson Walker got Northeastern started with the team's first eight points, with Zane Martin hitting a three in-between.  Towson went after the paint for layups to cut the deficit to one, taking the lead on a Martin fast break for a 9-8 Towson advantage four minutes in.
  • Northeastern responded with a 9-0 run, begun by six straight points from Greg Eboigbodin.  After an exchange of points, Towson got its own run of 11 points in a row, capped by two layups from Jakigh Dottin, for a 22-19 Tigers lead with 6:39 left in the 1st.
  • The teams traded points for the next couple of minutes, with a Demetrius Mims layup and one returning the lead to Towson.  A couple of three-point plays from Jason Strong and Walker pushed the visitors back ahead.  In the final seconds of the half, Martin hit a big three to pull Towson within one, 39-38, at the break.
  • Jason Gibson drove to the basket for the second half's first play, hitting the layup and one.  With Towson up two, Northeastern went on a 13-2 run, with points from four different players, to lead 54-44, later going up 14 off two more baskets from Walker.
  • Towson looked to chip away with points from Mims and Martin, but Northeastern kept up its strong offense and built the lead to 15 twice.  The Huskies led 68-53 with 5:57 left in the game.
  • Towson had a comeback attempt with back-to-back three-point plays from Gibson and Dottin to get back within single digits with 5:26 to play, but the Tigers could not get closer.  NU added points from Walker and Shaquille Walters to go up 14.  Mims got Towson's last five points in the 76-67 defeat.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Either Zane Martin or Jason Gibson has led Towson in scoring in nine of ten games since Jan. 18.
  • Demetrius Mims has scored in double digits in Towson's last two home games.  It is his second-highest scoring game of the season, having 16 points vs. James Madison on Jan. 16.
