Women’s Volleyball Picks Up Where It Left Off

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Sure there were 442 days between matches for the Towson University women's volleyball team, but that didn't stop the Tigers from picking up where they left off in 2019.

Towson (1-0) opened its delayed 2021 campaign with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-22) sweep at Stony Brook University Saturday afternoon. Emily Jarome posted a double-double with a match-best 13 kills and 10 digs. The CAA Rookie of the Year in 2019, Lydia Wiers hit .538 with nine kills on 13 swings, paired with three total blocks.

Towson's defense held the Seawolves to a .136 hitting percentage, including 7.9 percent in the third frame. All-told, Towson finished with six total blocks and four service aces.

Picked third in the America East preseason poll, Stony Brook (0-2) was led by eight kills from Amiyah De'Long. Kiani Kerstetter had a busy afternoon on the back row with 18 digs.

How it Happened
  • In a tight first set, Towson led 9-8 before ripping off five straight points to open a 14-8 lead. Wiers contributed two kills in the run with Fay Bakodimou and Nina Cajic adding one each.
  • Both sides traded points before the Seawolves notched a five-point run of their own, pulling back to within three at 19-16 Towson. Using two-point mini runs, Towson would score six of the next eight points for a 25-18 decision. Two of those six points were blocking efforts while Jarome batted down two kills of her own.
  • Set two was another close start as the Tigers held a narrow 9-8 lead. But a 7-1 run would open things up for the Tigers, building to a 16-9 advantage, combining kills from Jarome, Cajic, Bakodimou and Nikiya Mitchell alongside timely blocking.
  • Stony Brook broke up the run with one point, but Towson returned with another five-point burst that included two service aces from Cajic. This time it was Jarome with the set point on a Kristin Spengler assist.
  • The third set was the tightest of the afternoon, seeing Stony Brook take its largest lead of the day at 13-7. The hosts looked to keep Towson at bay, grabbing a 19-13 lead, but the Tigers put together multiple-point runs while limiting the Seawolves from stringing together points.
  • Towson was down 21-18 before putting Stony Brook away with a 7-1 run. Cajic dropped in three kills in that stretch, which was aided by two attack errors to finish the set for a 25-22 Towson win and the sweep.

Behind the Numbers
  • Jarome led the season off with the eighth double-double (13 kill, 10 dig) of her career and first since Nov. 10, 2019.
  • Cajic batted down 12 balls in her first collegiate match, hitting a .323 for the day. She added six digs and two aces to her line as well.
  • Spengler handled the setting duties for a majority of the afternoon, pushing up a career-best 34 assists, nine more than her previous best (23 vs. UMBC, Sept. 15, 2018).
  • Weirs hit for a .538 in the match, scoring nine kills on 13 swings with just two errors.
  • Four Tigers posted double-digit digs, led by a dozen from Asia Goins, making her first start for Towson in the libero jersey. Spengler logged her first career double-double with 11 digs alongside her assist total. Jarome and Bakodimou grabbed 10 digs apiece.
  • Three Towson freshmen got their first collegiate experience, Cajic, Aayinde Smith and Sara Wasiakowska.
  • Towson's net defense was strong, holding Stony Brook to a .136 hitting percentage for the match, with a .214 percentage in the second set as the afternoon high for the Seawolves. Stony Brook had 14 attack errors.
  • The Tigers improved to 6-0 all-time, making their first trip to Stony Brook since the two schools were America East Conference foes for one season (2001). Towson is 2-0 all-time at Stony Brook.
  • Towson extended its regular season winning streak to 21-straight matches, dating back to Sept. 13, 2019.
  • Saturday's win was Towson's 12th-straight win over a member of the America East Conference while it was the Tigers' sixth-straight win on Long Island, dating back to an Oct. 27, 2017 sweep at Hofstra.

Quotient Quotables: Head Coach Don Metil
We were probably in a more unique situation than most programs after having not played in over 440 days -- graduating a large senior class and having to place five new athletes in roles on the court is a factor most programs did not have to face, so I am happy with the overall performance of this young squad.

We will get back in the lab and address things both offensively and defensively that need emphasis before seeing Temple next weekend on the road.

Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers play their second road match of the season next weekend at Temple University.
  • Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Owls' McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia.
  • Saturday's match will be aired on ESPN+.
