Men’s Swimming Tops Mount on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. -- It was a one-and-done home season for the Towson University men's swimming and diving program as the Tigers bested Mount St. Mary's 139-103 Saturday evening at Burdick Pool.

Another school record was added to the board for Brian Benzing as the Tigers (2-1) rolled past Mount St. Mary's in the first-ever meeting between the programs. Towson took first in every event it had a swimmer not exhibitioned.

How it Happened
  • Benzing set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke for a second time this season, touching in 53.62 seconds, bettering his own mark by nearly two seconds. Benzing picked up an NCAA B Cut with his time, going below the 54.27 mark for the even't B Cut.
  • Later in the day, Benzing went for a 2:02.26 in the 200-yard breaststroke, ranking sixth in program history.
  • Sprinter TJ Bearor nudged his best with a 21.34 in the 50-freestyle as Towson swept the event behind a 21.69 from Trey Adkins and a 22.70 from Andrew Lapin. Bearor later took first in the 100-yard freestyle as well, touching in 47.29.
  • Towson won the 200-yard medley relay with a 1 minute, 30.09 second finish from Evan Bota, Benzing, Nick McClure, and Michael Fazio
  • Rookie Coby Ockert won the 200-yard freestyle with a personal best 1:43.80m dropping his time by nearly two seconds.
  • Fazio and McClure went one-two in the 100-yard backstroke, touching in 51.14 and a 51.95 respectively.
  • Reed Sells won the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:55.81, besting teammates Patrick Flint (1:57.31) and Bota (1:58.09).
Quotable: Head Coach Jake Shrum
  • From the first event they had awesome energy, and it carried over into their races. TJ Bearor put together a great all around meet and we had a number of guys put in some pretty impressive in-season swims.
  • We rested Brian Benzing and gave him a shot at hitting the NCAA B standard, which he beat by over a half second and lowered his school record.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers round out the regular season next week with a split weekend at Delaware.
  • Diving events are slated for a 3 p.m. start on Friday, March 5 before swimming events on Saturday, March 6 at 11 a.m.
  • Both events will take place at Rawstrom Natatorium in downtown Newark, Delaware.
