Towson Women's Soccer Earns Dominant Shutout Victory vs. JMU

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's soccer team earned a dominant 2-0 shutout victory over James Madison on Sunday afternoon, completing non-conference play with a big win.

Towson (1-1-2) controlled the first half possession, but the game was scoreless at halftime.  Danielle Maggio scored in the 54th minute off a pass from Demi Pierre to give Towson the lead.  The Tigers held off JMU (0-1-1) then added insurance off a goal from Jenna Blank, being perfectly set up on passes from Pierre and Nia Christopher to complete the two-goal victory.

Due to the Colonial Athletic Association splitting the league teams into divisions this year, this was not a conference game.  Towson is playing in the North Division while JMU is in the South Division.

Key Stats:
  • Towson outshot JMU 14-8 in the game, including 10-2 in the first half.  Towson also put nine of its shots on goal to JMU's two.
  • Danielle Maggio earned her first goal as a Tiger off a 54th minute cross from Demi Pierre, grounding the ball inside the right post.  In the 88th minute, Pierre put a through pass to a running Nia Christopher.  Christopher drew the goalie off on the one-on-one, passing off to Jenna Blank for the goal on the open net.
  • The win in goal was earned by Riley Melendez, who earns her second shutout of his freshman season.  She finished the game with two saves.
  • For JMU, Iris Rabot had the most shots on the team with three, putting two on goal.  Alexandra Blom got the loss in goal with seven saves, all in the first half, and two goals allowed.

Postgame Quote:
--Towson head coach Katherine Vettori: "I'm so thrilled for our student-athletes, our staff and our fans to get this victory today.  We worked very hard in preparation for this game, we never stopped attacking.  The whole build-up and unselfishness for our goals, Demi [Pierre] to Danielle [Maggio], then Demi to Nia [Christopher] to Jenna [Blank], it was really fun to watch."

How It Happened:
  • After nine minutes of play primarily in the midfield, Nia Christopher got loose in the corner of the box and took aim, with Alexandra Blom making the save.  Minutes later, Demi Pierre had a long range chance, again with Blom having the stop.
  • Towson kept the pressure on and attacked in the 20th minute off a corner kick.  Khori Banks had a high shot off the clear-out attempt from JMU.  Minutes later, Christopher blazed a shot towards cage as Blom knocked it away.  A second chance attempt by Jacey Miller was picked up by Blom.
  • Minute 35 saw Phoebe Canoles and Alexandra Rush kick back-and-forth from a corner kick.  Canoles fired long range and slammed the crossbar.  The two sides would go into halftime tied at zero.
  • Action picked up in the second half as the two teams got more aggressive trying to push the ball.  In the 54th minute, Pierre went down the right side and crossed into the box.  Danielle Maggio tapped the ball past the keeper inside the right post for the goal, giving Towson a 1-0 lead.
  • Going to a three-forward look in the second half, JMU started getting corner kicks and close chances.  Hannah Coulling looked for a 20-meter shot, sending the ball wide.
  • JMU tested Towson's defense in the 70th minute with a couple of corner kicks.  A first chance by Lexi Vanderlinden was blocked, and the second time, Towson sent away the ball to hold the lead.
  • Iris Rabot had two looks at the cage, each from long range, as Riley Melendez made saves in the 80th and 81st minutes.
  • After JMU brought on four substitutions for a final push, Towson held and counterattacked in minute 88.  Pierre passed a perfect through ball to a racing Christopher.  Christopher got to the box on a one-on-one with the keeper, drew off the keeper and passed to her left to Jenna Blank for the one-touch kick and goal, putting Towson up 2-0.
  • Towson nearly added a third as again Blank got a chance in the final two minutes on a breakaway, but sent the ball right of the post.  Towson took the victory 2-0.
