Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Overtime at #16/#18 Delaware

NEWARK, Del. -- In a back-and-forth game all afternoon, the Towson University men's lacrosse team fell 13-12 in overtime at the University of Delaware.

Towson (2-5, 0-2 CAA) held a 9-5 lead at halftime, but No. 16/No. 18 Delaware out-scored Towson 7-3 in the final 30 minutes to force the first overtime meeting between the teams since the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship. Tye Kurtz scored the game-winning goal late in the possession clock.

The Tigers got a career-best seven points from James Avanzato, who finished with two goals and five assists. Andrew Milani posted his third-straight hat trick as Brody McLean stuck two goals. Shane Santora won 50 percent of his draws, grabbing 14 wins. Shane Brennan made a dozen saves in net for Towson.

Delaware (6-1, 3-0 CAA) had a four-point day from Charlie Kitchen on three goals and one assist. Michael Robinson and Cam Acchione added hat tricks. Kurtz logged two assists in addition to the game-winning goal.

How it Happened
  • Both sides traded blows as the game was tied at 1-1 and then 2-2 with 9:42 left in the first quarter as Milani scored his first of the day. Delaware took a 3-2 lead three minutes later before Stewart hit his first, deadlocking the action at 3-3.
  • The Stewart goal sparked a five-goal run for the Tigers, who enjoyed a 7-3 lead after 15 minutes. Towson had five different contributors in the run, first from Stewart then Swain (3:10) with Avanzato on the back end of those two goals. Tim Montgomery extended the lead at 1:41, followed by markers from Milani with 59 seconds in the quarter while Brody McLean rounded out the frame with 18 seconds to play. Avanzato contributed three assists on the run, feeding McLean's marker.
  • Delaware scored back-to-back early in the second quarter from Kitchen and Drew Lenaktis but Towson finished the half with another pair from Avanzato and Milan, who scored his third-straight hat trick.
  • After the pause, Towson came right back to its scoring ways as Swain notched his second of the day, slipping past his defender and getting an inside shot.
  • Delaware halted the Tiger run at three on Kitchen's second of the day in a transition chance after a Tiger transition opportunity was nullified. The Blue Hens got back out quickly as Kurtz fed Kitchen on the doorstep.
  • The Blue Hens continued the run with another pair of goals from Robinson and Mark Bieda at 8:32 and 7:36, respectively, in the third quarter. That capped the third quarter with a 10-8 Towson lead.
  • Delaware carried that momentum into the fourth quarter as Robinson made it a one-goal affair with 13:50 to play in the final frame.
  • The Tigers halted the scoreless drought with its second goal of the entire second half as Avanzato used a pick from Jake McLean to get free inside and scored low and away. Avanzato drew a late crosscheck to the head, putting Towson on the extra-man.
  • Later in the fourth, Avanzato found a wind-open Brody McLean on the crease and fed his linemate for his fifth assist of the afternoon and a 12-9 Towson lead.
  • Delaware trimmed into the Tiger lead with 5:19 to play in the fourth on a goal from Cam Acchione during an extra-man chance. Kurtz had the assist.
  • Delaware scored twice with another Accione goal followed by a Kitchen marker to tie the game 12-12 with 1:06 to play. Towson went man-down following the goal after a cross-checking penalty was assessed. The Tiger downers successfully killed off the penalty and Towson had its second extra-stanza game of the season.
  • Late in the possession clock, Kurtz slipped around the crease and scored the game-winning goal with 2:41 left in the first overtime.
Behind the Numbers
  • Avanzato led the game with his career-best seven points. His five assists tied the program mark for a single game in the Shawn Nadelen Era (2012).
  • Milani scored his third-straight hat trick, dating back to the Tigers' battle at #18 Richmond.
  • Delaware out-shot the Tigers 41-37, taking 13 chances in the fourth quarter alone. Towson ripped off 12 in the first frame, scoring on seven of those chances.
  • Towson controlled the ground ball game with a 37-28 edge, thanks to 15 caused turnovers. Reece Potter and Mo Sillah responsible for three forces apiece.
  • The Tigers allowed one extra-man goal on two penalties, but could not capitalize on two Delaware penalties.
  • Saturday's result snapped a five-game winning streak for the Tigers against Delaware. In a series dating back to the 1961 campaign, Towson leads 45-19 all-time against the Blue Hens.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers step out of CAA play next weekend, hosting another longtime rival, Loyola University Maryland.
  • Game time is set for noon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium on Saturday.
  • Loyola (3-2) is ranked 12th in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
