Tigers Continue to Roll With Sweep at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. -- Picking right back up in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play, the Towson University women's volleyball swept the University of Delaware 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-19) Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Towson (3-0, 1-0 CAA North) was paced by rookie Nina Cajic, who finished with 11 kills on 22 swings with a .364 hitting percentage. Sophomore libero Asia Goins posted 15 digs while junior setter Kristin Spengler posted 30 assists.

As a team, the Tigers finished with seven blocks, getting four from freshman Aayinde Smith. Lydia Wiers contributed three as well.

Delaware (1-3, 0-1 CAA North) struggled on the attack, hitting at .054 percent. Savannah Seeman led with eight kills on 26 swings. Ezgi Basaranlar has 22 assists.

How it Happened
  • The home-standing Blue Hens jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the first set before the Tigers called a timeout. Out of the break, Towson reeled off six-straight points for a 15-13 lead, forcing Delaware to burn a timeout.
  • Towson fought off Delaware's comeback bid in the set with a 19-16 lead, capped by a Smith and Spengler block, pushing Delaware into another timeout.
  • Towson scored six of the next nine points to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 set score. Three Towson blocks held the Blue Hens to a 0.62 hitting percentage with eight total errors.
  • Set two was all Towson early as the Tigers ripped off a 10-2 run en route to a 10-6 lead. Out of a Delaware timeout, the Tigers continued to roll for a 15-7 lead behind an emphatic Wiers kill. Delaware called its second timeout of the frame and made headway on the deficit, but the Tigers slammed the door with a 10-7 run for a 25-14 set two finish.
  • The third set was back-and-forth early, featuring five ties as the score was deadlocked 16-16. With an 18-16 lead and coming out of a Delaware timeout, the Tigers completed the sweep with a 7-3 run and a 25-19 set finish.
Behind the Numbers
  • The Tigers finished with a .284 hitting percentage while holding Delaware to a .054. It is the lowest hitting percentage for a Tiger opponent this season.
  • Cajic led the match with 11 kills. Bakodimou was tied for second in the match with her eight kills. 
  • Spengler led the way with her 30 assists while Goins notched a match-high 15 digs.
  • Towson has now won 23 straight regular season matches, paired with 22 straight CAA wins in the regular season, dating back to the 2018 campaign. The Tigers have reeled off 12 straight regular season matches on the road. Towson has won 10 straight matches against Delaware in the Bob Carpenter Center and has not dropped a set to the Hens since the 2017 season.
