Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Charleston for Second Finals Berth

TOWSON, Md. -- A come-from-behind third set sealed the Towson University's women's volleyball team's berth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship for a second-straight season.

The top seed in the CAA's North Division, Towson (5-0) topped the College of Charleston, second seed from the south, in straight sets, going 25-19, 25-23, 25-22. Emily Jarome turned in a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs while Kristin Spengler handed out 38 assists. Towson combined for 10 blocks, limiting Charleston to a .059 hitting percentage.

The Cougars (5-6) were paced by seven kills from Lexi Wierzbicki and Logan Pope. Setters Amani Dunston and Tori Carpenter finished with 14 and 10 assists, respectively. Hazel Brown had 19 digs on the back line while Defensive Specialist Logan Manusky finished with 15.

Towson awaits the winner of the day's second semifinal match between the South's top seed, James Madison, and the North's second seed, Northeastern. The Spring 2021 CAA Women's Volleyball Championship match is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday and will be carried on FloVolleyball.

How it Happened
  • Towson and Charleston battled early in the first set, which featured nine ties and eight lead changes. After the Cougars scored a 15-14 lead, Towson rattled off six straight points to take the lead for good in the first set. Towson had two blocks in the run from Lydia Wiers, paired with Emily Jarome and Kristin Spengler.
  • The Cougars challenged late to make it 21-19 Towson, but the Tigers closed the door on the opening set with four straight points, including kills from Nina Cajic and Kristin Spengler.
  • Set two was a similar start as the entire frame had eight ties and two lead changes. Charleston took a 5-3 lead before Towson scored three straight points for a 6-5 advantage. Later in the set, Charleston surged with five straight points to tie things at 17-17. Late in the set, with things tied 22-22, Towson got three of the final four points thanks to kills from Jarome and Fay Bakodimou for the 25-23 win.
  • In the third set, Towson held control early, grabbing a 13-10 advantage before the Cougars strung together five unanswered points for a 15-13 lead. Charleston won the race to 20 and held a 22-18 lead. Down but not done, Towson rallied past Charleston with seven straight points, all with Bakodimou on the line, for a 25-22 set score and Towson's second-straight sweep in a CAA Tournament.

  • Towson hit for .176 in the match. It has been nearly three weeks since the Tigers' last match following COVID 19 protocols and pause for Towson.
