ARLINGTON, Va. – The Towson University baseball team took an early 4-2 lead at George Washington, including back-to-back home runs by
Javon Fields and
Brandon Austin, but fell to the Colonials 8-4 on a very windy day in Arlington.
Winds reached upwards of 30 miles per hour at Tucker Field as Towson (13-22) took advantage early with back-to-back home runs in the second inning but fell to six unanswered runs by GW (12-10).
The loss snaps Towson's three-game winning streak.
Key Stats:
- Brandon Austin reached base three times in the game, finishing 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks. Javon Fields hit a two-run home run in the second to conclude 1-for-4 on the afternoon.
- On the mound, starter Nick Ramanjulu pitched the first with two runs and a strikeout, followed by Nolan Bolt going two scoreless. The defeat went to Matt Watters (0-1), who had three runs surrendered in the fourth inning, striking out one.
- GW hit three home runs in the game, including one by Noah Levin, who hit 2-for-4, adding a triple and three RBI. Starter Keagan McGinnis did not get a decision with two innings, three runs and three strikeouts. Reliever Connor Harris (1-0) picked up the victory, throwing four scoreless frames and striking out three.
How It Happened:
- With the wind whipping towards the outfield, hitters got some early help against pitchers from the elements. GW got the early lead off a two-run home run from Noah Levin in the first inning.
- Towson took advantage in the next half-inning, starting with Noah Cabrera getting hit by a pitch. Javon Fields sent a ball down the left field line and over the fence for a two-run home run to tie the game. Next batter, Brandon Austin launched a pitch over the left-field fence for a solo shot, giving Towson the lead 3-2.
- Nolan Bolt held down the Colonials as Towson added insurance in the fourth. Back-to-back walks and a passed ball set up second and third. Jack McLaughlin hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Austin for a 4-2 Towson advantage.
- GW then got assistance from the wind in the bottom of the fourth, using an RBI double to left and a two-run home run by Eddie Micheletti to go up 5-4.
- GW added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, the latter a two-run home run by Tyler Hix, to lead 8-4.
- Towson had a comeback attempt in the eighth, picking up a couple of runners with walks from Nolan Young and Austin, but could not get a run across. GW held and won 8-4.
Inside the Numbers:
- With a stolen base by Nolan Young today, Towson has 52 stolen bases this year. One more would place the 2021 team in the top-10 for steals in a single season in Towson history.
- Brandon Austin and Javon Fields share the team lead for home runs with three each.
- In his last two games at GW in Arlington, Brandon Austin is a combined 4-for-6 with three RBI.
Next Game:
Towson returns to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play on Friday, April 23, beginning with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Hofstra.
