Towson Volleyball Repeats as CAA Champions

TOWSON, Md. -- The North Division's top seed Towson used an overpowering attack to defeat the North Division's second seed Northeastern 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-22) and win its second consecutive CAA Volleyball Championship Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena on the campus of Towson University.

Towson improves to 6-0 on the season and the Tigers have now won 18 of the 19 sets that they played during the spring. Northeastern dropped to 8-3 after the defeat.

Towson provided a balanced attack as four individuals recorded eight or more kills during the match. Lydia Wiers led all attackers with 13 kills while hitting an outstanding .619. Emily Jarome recorded 11 kills for her second match with double-digit kills in the CAA Tournament. The tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Nina Cajic, just missed out on a double-double, recording nine kills and 11 digs in the Championship match. This comes after leading all attackers in the semifinal match with 15 kills. Fay Bakodimou also added eight kills and recorded 12 digs.

Northeastern rallied off the first three points of the match jumping out to a 3-0 lead. However, Towson battled back, and facing a 9-8 deficit, went on a 5-0 run of their own to take a 13-9 lead midway through the first set. The teams continued to trade blows and Northeastern tied the set at 22 on a Maddie Donaphon service ace. Facing set point, Towson's Cajic recorded back-to-back kills to turn the tables making it a 25-24 advantage for the Tigers. Towson won the set 26-24 after an attacking error out of a Northeastern timeout.

For the second straight set Northeastern had a fast start, grabbing a 4-0 lead to begin the second. Towson immediately responded with a 4-0 run to knot the set at four. Down 9-8, Towson sparked a 7-2 run to gain a 15-11 advantage. Later in the set, holding an 18-15 lead, Towson went on a 5-0 run to extend its advantage and eventually took the set 25-17.

Facing a 11-6 deficit in the third set, Towson went on a 14-3 run to gain the momentum in what proved to be the match-clinching set. The run gave Towson a commanding 20-14 lead. The Huskies made one final push, cutting the deficit to 23-21, but the Tigers proved to be too much, winning the set by a score of 25-22.

Overall, Towson hit .283 for the match while Northeastern swung at a .183 clip. The Tigers also had a 63.1 side out percentage while holding the Huskies to a 52.7 side out percentage.
