Godrick Late Home Run Not Enough as Towson Baseball Falls in CAAs to W&M

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The 5-seed Towson University baseball team used a three-run home run off the bat of Billy Godrick in an attempt to come back in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament, but fell to 6-seed William & Mary 7-3.

Towson (21-36) was down seven after seven-and-a-half innings to William & Mary (14-28), with the Godrick home run bringing the Tigers within four.  Towson got the leadoff hitter on base in the ninth but could not get closer.

The 2021 season for the Tigers comes to a close with today's defeat.  Towson's 21 victories are the most since 2014 plus the Tigers were in the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.

Key Stats:
  • Billy Godrick finished 1-for-3 with his three-run home run in the eighth inning.  Danny Becerra reached base three times on a 2-for-3 day, including a double, walk and run scored while Nolan Young hit 2-for-4 from the three-spot in the order.
  • Starting pitcher Nick Janowicz (3-3) got the loss, throwing six innings with three runs charged and a strikeout.  Relievers Matt Watters, Kody Reeser and Jake Pecilunas combined for two scoreless innings thrown from the bullpen.
  • For W&M, Matt McDermott hit 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and two runs scored.  Starting pitcher Zach Tsakounis (3-2) picked up the win, going 7.1 innings with one run and five strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • William & Mary got on the board in the opening inning, using a double and one-out RBI single to lead 1-0.
  • Nick Janowicz pitched through the next two innings with ease, not allowing a runner past first base in that time.  W&M got runs in the fourth and fifth to lead 3-0.
  • Towson threatened in the bottom of the sixth as a seeing-eye single to right put runners on first and second with two out.  W&M induced a ground out to end the threat.  W&M added a pair of runs in each the seventh and eighth to lead 7-0.
  • Towson was not finished, as Brandon Austin and Danny Becerra reached on a walk and single respectively with one out.  Billy Godrick took the first pitch and blasted it over the left field fence for the three-run home run, pulling Towson within four.  But, Towson could not get closer and fell 7-3.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Jake Pecilunas made his 82nd career appearance on the mound, two away from tying the program record.
  • Javon Fields has reached base in his last 29 games while Nolan Young ends the season on a six-game hitting streak.
