Volleyball Grabs Second Sweep of the Day

BALTIMORE -- It was another big afternoon for the Towson University women's volleyball team as the Tigers picked up their third-straight sweep, topping Binghamton University in straight sets Saturday evening at Hill Field House.

In the final match at Morgan State for the Baltimore Invitational, the Tigers topped the Bearcats 25-14, 25-15, 25-13 while limiting Binghamton to a negative hitting percentage. Towson held its first three foes of the year below two-percent hitting to open the season.

Towson (3-0) put two players in double figure kills, paced by Fay Bakodimou's dozen, while Nina Cajic added another 10 kills. Cajic led the Tiger offense with a .562 hitting in the second match of the day, paced by 35 assists from Megan Wilson. Rachel Hess grabbed another 14 digs while Emily Jarome dropped in three service aces, bringing her daily total to seven.

Binghamton (1-2) was led by Annie Bart and ehr five kills. Emily Rail picked up eight digs. Kiara Adams put up six assists, three digs and two kills.

How it Happened
  • Like it has done throughout the young season, Towson jumped out early in the first set, going up 7-2 early, including a run of five straight with Lydia Wiers, Megan Wilson and Bakodimou scoring kills in succession.
  • Binghamton pulled within three on back-to-back points at 7-4 in favor of Towson, but the Tigers opened up the set with mini runs, including three straight to grab a 16-9 advantage with a Wiers kill and Cajic ace. The Bearcats reeled off three straight for a 16-12 Towson lead, but the Tigers responded in kind with a 6-1 burst to take control, 22-13.
  • The Tigers shut the door on the first set with a 3-0 run, getting kills from Jarome and Cajic for the 25-14 set win.
  • Set two was tight early as the Bearcats jumped up 3-0 early before Towson tied things at 5-5 behind a 3-1 run. Binghamton took its lead out to 10-6, but Towson strung together a 5-1 run to wrest back control 12-11.
  • Binghamton tied the set for a final time at 12-12 before the Tigers cruised past with a 13-3 run, including a 6-0 flourish to end the set 25-15. Jarome knocked down a pair of kills while Nikiya Mitchell and Cajic added terminating swings as well.
  • Towson opened the final set with a 7-3 lead, capitalizing on several errors by the Bearcats. Cajic put in one kill while Bakodimou accounted for two in the run.
  • With an 11-8 lead, Towson ran off six unanswered points which featured two more Jarome aces and another pair of Bakodimou kills. Towson held off a small rally attempt from Binghamton, shutting the door on the match with a 7-2 run for a 25-13 third set victory and the match.
Behind the Numbers
  • Bakodimou and Cajic landed 12 and 10 kills respectively, marking the first time this fall the Tigers had two players in double figures.
  • Megan Wilson ran the offense Saturday evening, putting up 35 assists, surpassing her previous best (32) as a member of the Towson program. Hess snagged 14 digs, her third-straight match with at least 10 digs and the second highest total during her Tiger career.
  • Towson rounded out the first three matches with a .446 hitting percentage, terminating 114 kills on 202 swings. The Tiger defense was present in the Saturday finale as well, holding a second opponent in negative hitting this season. Cleveland State has been the only team to hit positive against Towson this fall, and that was at a .013 percentage.
  • The Tigers dropped in five more service aces, including three from the hand of Jarome, who was named to the All-Tournament Team. The remainder of the All-Tournament Team will be announced after Sunday's match at Navy.
  • Sara Wasiakowska scored the first collegiate kill of her career, putting down her lone swing of the night against Binghamton to get the Tigers to match point.
  • Towson improved to 4-1 all-time against Binghamton in the first meeting between the programs since 2015. It was the Tigers' third-straight win over the Bearcats and second-straight sweep.
  • The Tigers have now won 27 straight regular season matches, stretching back to mid-September 2019.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers travel to the state capital on Sunday to take on the United States Naval Academy, which is also competing at the Baltimore Invitational at Morgan State.
  • First serve in Annapolis is slated for 2 p.m. at Wesley A. Brown Field House.
  • It will be the first meeting between the two state foes since head coach Don Metil's first season at Towson in 2013.
  • The all-time series between Towson and Navy is close, with the Tigers holding a 23-22 edge thanks to four straight wins over the Mids.
