TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's soccer team showed strong pressure all game against its Baltimore County rival, but came up with a 1-1 draw vs. UMBC on Sunday night.
Towson (1-1-2) outshot UMBC (1-0-1) 31-10 in the game, equalizing in the 70
th minute off a goal from
Demi Pierre. Towson continued to threaten but did not go ahead, pushing to a draw.
Towson is now unbeaten against UMBC in its last 11 meetings against the Retrievers.
856 fans, including many Towson student-athletes and community members came to support the Tigers, the largest crowd since the Tiger Field renovation.
Key Stats:
- As a team, Towson had 14 corner kicks, including seven in the second half, to UMBC's three.
- Demi Pierre scored her first goal since Aug. 29, 2019 with the equalizer in the 70th minute, being assisted by Phoebe Canoles. Nia Christopher led all players in shots with nine, putting four on goal. Riley Melendez had the draw, making four saves in net with one goal allowed.
- UMBC scored on a long free kick by Erin Stevenson in the 44th minute, being the team's main offensive threat with three shots. In her first start of the year, Morgan McGruder had the draw with one goal allowed and nine saves.

- Towson head coach Katherine Vettori: "We had a great crowd tonight, we are very thankful the student-athletes and community supported us so much. I'm very proud of the effort tonight, we are fighting hard and defending well, now we just need to score some goals. UMBC did well and stuck to their gameplan, and this is the first time we were down a goal and equalized."
How It Happened:
- Nia Christopher was the target for Towson passes as Towson pushed in the early going. Twice the Bermuda native took aim from just outside the box in the opening 14 minutes, with both being saved by Morgan McGruder.
- Towson continued to get chances, with shots from Phoebe Canoles and Camryn Anderson not being on cage. Erin Stevenson led a counter effort for UMBC, missing on a long shot wide left in the 24th minute.
- The Tigers continued to keep pressure in the box as Towson had a span of five straight shots between the 28th and 35th minutes, with two being saved and another three missing right.
- Just before the final minute of the first half, Stevenson lined up for a free kick from long range. Her blast bounced high and into the corner of the net for the goal, putting UMBC up 1-0 at the break.
- Towson looked to rebound early in the second half as Christopher again got free on an 18-meter shot, but saved by McGruder. Three minutes later, Alyssa Palmucci tried a long blast the other way, with Riley Melendez making the stop.
- After holding off a couple of corner kicks from the Tigers, UMBC got a couple of chances off a cross into the box. Twice UMBC took aim near close range, twice Melendez made the save in the 64th minute.
- Circling back after an Emily Kirkpatrick shot was blocked, a pass was deflected off a defender to Demi Pierre. She arced a close-range kick inside the post to equalize the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute.
- Towson nearly scored again as it kept the pressure on, leading to wide shots from Sierra Granata and Canoles. Off a corner in the 83rd minute, Maja Hansson had a strong look off a second effort, again being saved by McGruder. The two sides would go into overtime.
- After holding on defense after an Izzy Binko shot went wide, Towson pushed back in the 95th minute as a hard kick from Christopher was blocked. The next minute, again Canoles had a look outside the box and was saved. Towson had two corner kicks in the final minute but could not convert and went into a second OT.
- Towson got the only two shots in the second overtime, including an early attempt by Khori Banks being saved by McGruder. Canoles had another attempt that missed left minutes later. Towson and UMBC finished in a draw.
