Tigers Swing Past Lehigh in Straight Sets

TOWSON, Md. -- "Swing away" was the mantra for Towson University's women's volleyball Friday afternoon as the Tigers took down Lehigh University in straight sets in the homeside's opener of the Tiger Invitational.

Towson (9-0) picked up its third win of the season against a Patriot League foe, dropping the Mountain Hawks in three, 25-14, 25-13, 25-16.

The Tigers had big afternoons from Fay Bakodimou, who scored 11 kills on 17 swings with no errors, a .647 hitting percentage, while Sara Wasiakowska batted down eight kills on 13 swings, again with no miscues, for a .615. Rachel Hess tracked down 15 digs with Bakodimou, Megan Wilson and Lydia Wiers scoring two aces apiece.

Lehigh (2-5) was led by seven kills from Megan Schulte (.154) with Makena Smith putting up a match-best 20 assists. Towson's serve-receive stymied the Mountain Hawks, who were held without an ace through the match.

How it Happened
  • It was Towson quickly in the first set as the Tigers ripped out to a 9-3 lead, anchored by a Bakodimou ace that pushed Lehigh into a timeout. The visiting Mountain Hawks pulled back within five later in the set, Towson leading 14-9, but a quick 6-2 run put the Tigers ahead 20-11.
  • Towson sealed a first-set win with another fast 5-2 run for a 25-14 decision.
  • Towson Towson opened up set two with a 4-1 lead, Lehigh clawed back to within one at 5-4. The Tigers responded with a 3-1 run to go back up by three at 8-5.
  • Towson's defense was stout in the second set, keeping Lehigh from consecutive points. Conversely, Towson's offense had free reign, putting down an 8-1 run midway through the set to open things to an 18-8 lead. The sides traded points through the back end of the set before Towson sealed a 25-13 win on a kill from middle blocker Aayinde Smith.
  • Like set one, the third was all Towson early as the Tigers grabbed a 4-0 lead and eventually out to a 6-1 advantage. Towson more than doubled the Hawks, taking a 10-4 lead before Lehigh threatened and cut the lead to three at 12-9, Towson.
  • That closeness was short lived as the Tigers strung together a 6-1 run for an 18-10 lead. Lehigh again rallied back with a 4-0 burst, cutting the Towson lead to 18-14, but Towson finished its seventh sweep of the year with a 7-2 run to decide the set 25-16.
Behind the Numbers
