Towson Sweeps Through Tiger Invitational

BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. -- It was a clean sweep through the Tiger Invitational as the Towson University women's volleyball team got past Norfolk State University in three sets to conclude the weekend.

Towson (12-0) improved to 8-0 at home this season with a 25-14, 25-11, 25-23 win over the visiting Spartans, hitting for .426 in the match. The Tigers came up with five total blocks and were thwarted at the net just once.

Nina Cajic and Lydia Wiers led the Tigers with a dozen kills apiece, with the latter hitting for .706 with 17 swings and zero errors. Morgan Wilson made another start for the Tigers, putting down 11 kills while Kristin Spengler put up 24 assists.

Norfolk State (3-5) was led by seven kills from Rachel Williams, while setter Caris Cross had 18 assists. Libero Nicole Rodriguez capped the tournament with 14 digs for the Spartans.

How it Happened
  • Set one was all Towson early as the Tigers took a commanding 10-4 lead. Later in the frame, the Tigers doubled up on Norfolk State at 20-10, staving off a comeback bid thanks to a .500 hitting percentage in the first set. Towson kept Norfolk State to a .091 percentage in the opening frame.
  • The second set was similar as Towson popped off with a 10-2 lead in the first dozen serves. Norfolk State strung together three straight points to pull back within five of the Tigers, but another long surge from Towson gave the hosts a 21-9 lead. Towson picked up the 25-11 win on back-to-back kills from Morgan Wilson and Wiers, respectively.
  • Towson's  offense was cooled to a .371 hitting in the second set, but Norfolk State struggled to connect its offense, hitting .024 in the second, with another pair of Tiger blocks stopping the way.
  • The third set was much tighter, featuring 10 ties and two lead changes. After the Tigers jumped up 8-4, Norfolk State fought back and tied the set 11-11. Both sides tied the frame four more times before the Spartans took a 17-15 lead. Both teams traded points before Towson deadlocked the action at 20-20.
  • Then it was Norfolk State's turn to rally back, tying the action at 22. The Tigers scored three of the next four serves to complete the sweep, 25-23 in the third.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson had three in double figure kills, led by 12 each from Wiers and Cajic. Morgan Wilson added 11 to her evening as well.
  • Spengler was two digs shy of a double-double, coming up with eight to go alongside 24 assists. Megan Wilson put up 15 assists as well.
  • Emily Jarome accounted for three block assists while sophomore Aayinde Smith had two total blocks, including a solo stuff.
  • For the match, Towson hit for .426, including a.500 in the first and a .412 in the third. Norfolk State had a .341 hitting percentage in the third set.
  • Towson won its first-ever meeting with Norfolk State while improving to 3-0 on the season against MEAC opponents.
  • The Tigers ran their regular season winning streak out to 36, dating back to mid-September 2019.
  • Towson won its 75th match all-time at SECU Arena.
