Tigers Open SECU Arena in Straight Sets

BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. -- Playing at SECU Arena for the first time since hoisting the conference championship trophy in April, the Towson University women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over visiting Stony Brook University for the first match of the Towson Invitational.

Towson (5-0) overcame slow starts in each set for its fourth sweep of the 2021 season, going 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 in the second meeting against the Seawolves this calendar year.

Emily Jarome paced Towson with a big day on the attack, scoring 16 kills on 28 swings with zero errors. The senior outside hit for .571 in the match. Fay Bakodimou added a double-double, scoring 11 kills alongside 10 digs. As a team, Towson came up with 8.5 blocks, with Bakodimou in on three, along with four from the hands of Nina Cajic and Lydia Wiers. Megan Wilson put up 40 assists, her second straight match with at least 40 helpers and her first in a three-set match this spring.

Stony Brook (0-4) had one play in double figure kills, led by 11 from Enitan Omolewa. Torri Henry added 27 assists on the day while putting up a double-double thanks to 12 digs. Stony Brook hit for .252 in the match, the highest for a Towson opponent this year.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped up 2-0 in the opening set before the Seawolves rallied to a 6-3 advantage. The Tigers clawed back in for a 10-9 lead behind a service ace from Hess before Stony Brook added a 3-0 run for a 12-9 lead.
  • Through the middle part of the set, the teams tied seven times before Towson took a 23-22 lead and never looked back, getting kills from Bakodimou and a pair from Jarome for a 3-0 set deciding run.
  • Set two started out differently as the Seawolves grabbed a 5-1 lead early behind a 4-0 run with Henry back at the line.Stony Brook kept the Tigers at bay until Towson deadlocked the action at 11-11. The teams battled through another four ties, including the final one at 20-20. Towson ripped off five in a row, including a hat trick of kills from Jarome to finish the set.
  • Like deja vu all over again, set three was close early and often; the frame was tied five times in the first 18 points, locked at 9-9. Towson wrested control at 10-9 thanks to a swing from middle blocker Nikiya Mitchell. Towson had a 3-0 run behind a pair of blocks from Mitchell alongside Bakodimou and Cajic. 
  • Towson held off any Stony Brook run with several three and four point leads. Leading 20-17, Towson put together a 5-3 run to seal the win to officially open SECU Arena this fall.

Behind the Numbers
  • Jarome led the match at .571 hitting efficiency, scoring a match-best 16 kills. Bakodimou (11) and Cajic (10) added double digit kills as well.
  • The Tigers hit for .407 in the match, the third time this fall Towson has hit over .400 in a match. The Tigers over mediocre start on the attack, hitting .288 and .281 in the first and second set before knocking for 18 kills on 35 swings with zero errors in the third set, a .514 percentage.
  • Towson came up with 57 digs, including 17 from Hess and another 14 from Jarome. Bakodimou and Jarome collected the first doubles of the season for the Tigers.
  • Towson has now won all seven meetings with the Seawolves.
  • The Tigers ran their winning streak out to 29 dating back to mid-September 2019.
  • Towson won its 69th match all-time at SECU Arena.
